September 3, 2011, a day forever etched into the hearts and minds of those who know and love Estevan. What was intended to be a Grand Canyon weekend getaway last Labor Day Weekend, instead ended in great tragedy.
After careening off the side of the highway, rolling down hill, and flipping an estimated five times at the bottom, Estevan was airlifted to the nearest trauma center. While being treated for what was assumed would be a fatal crack to his skull, stretching from one ear to the other, it was discovered he had lost all sensation from the shoulders down.
As time went on it became more apparent Estevan had sustained a sever spinal cord injury leaving him unable to sit, stand, walk, talk, eat, or breathe on his own. Estevan spent the next 116 consecutive days in ICU, connected to life support, fighting day in and day out to live. Though he was released back to his home after the hospital, year one of his injury has been marked by great sickness and numerous other struggles associated with adjusting to life as a ventilator dependent quadriplegic.
Having tried various traditional therapies with little to no success, it seemed as though Estevan's only option was to suck it up and fully adjust to his new life...until he found NextStep Fitness. Therapist at NextStep have been successful in their efforts to help a number of paralyzed individuals regain function of various extremities through the use of Locomotor training, functional electrical stimulation and adaptive activity based training. For instance, their founder, a quadriplegic like Estevan, no longer requires the use of a vent, stands straight up with the use of a walker, can take a few steps at a time, and drives himself to work daily. While every injury is unique and there are no promises as to what may come back after such an injury, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. We ask for your help in giving Estevan a shot. There is no donation too small, every dollar will make a difference. In advance, we would like to thank you for your love and support. Now let's work together and get Estevan BACK ON HIS FEET!!
