The Story

Thursday, October 3rd, Dean had an accident at home that left him with injuries to his face and brain. At this time we aren't sure what his long-term condition will be, but we do know that he will need multiple surgeries and will have a long recovery period. His family is in need of financial support to help pay for unpaid medical expenses and to allow Vickie to take time off from work to visit Dean in the hospital and to care for him when he eventually comes home.

The goal amount of $12,000 is based on projected unpaid insurance expenses.

The Jares family has been strong supporters of others in our community for years. Please help them in their time of desperate need.

Fundraiser Updates

Posted on January 6, 2014 by Friends of the Jares Family

Happy new year to all you wonderful, giving and caring human beings out there. I am writing as we have completed the 2013 tests and doctor appointments and thought you all would like an update.

Dean's jaw is still wired but that was expected. We will find out more concerning that in a month. His eye we will find out more about in 2 months. Dean is doing very well, his spirits are rising as well as his energy level. He is anxious to begin driving and has been keeping himself busy doing things around the house.

There is not as of yet a lot of news, but Dean is doing exceptionally well, the doctors have all been pleased and a bit surprised, they say he is a good healer.

We had a quiet Thanksgiving and Christmas, it was pleasant and felt comfortable.

Thanks to all who have given a part of yourself to make our situation less stressful and also to remind us of all the many many things we have to be grateful for!

Happy new year to everyone, we are wishing for 2014 to have memories that make us smile.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude towards all who have helped us in the many ways that they have, including keeping us in their thoughts. It has been warming and comforting to feel the care & concern that has come from many directions.

Dean is slowly coming along, he still has surgeries ahead of him and is, of course, a bit concerned about them. His therapy goes to once a week starting after Thanksgiving, he is glad about that. We find out the end of December how his healing is coming along and I will re-post to you then. For now, it's one day at a time, and I am grateful for the days.

Just a fast update:

Dean is doing amazingly well. Thank you all so much for your positive thoughts; I do really believe it makes a difference. He is in therapy 6 days a week from 9am-315pm. I am sitting at the hospital right now, so thought I would take a moment to send an update. His reconstruction of his lower jaw went perfectly! The upper jaw will be a few months in the determination and possibly more surgeries. His sinuses are done. There will be surgeries over the next year. They are going to call us Monday about blinking possibilities, who'd of thunk it??

Things are going amazingly well!

Hugs & much gratitude to everyone,

The increased goal is based on recent information Vickie has received from the insurance company about what expenses will be unpaid.

Dean spent his first night at home last night. He seems happy to be home but is really tired. He began therapy sessions yesterday and will be going to and from St Vincents 6 days a week.

From Vickie:
Yesterday morning I got a phone call FROM DEAN!! it was awesome!

They are planning to release him possibly as early as Monday (tomorrow)! They are working to set him up for intense physical therapy at St Vincents Hospital for outpatient treatment. If all goes as planned he will start Tuesday, his sessions will be 9am-3pm Monday thru Friday.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone in all the ways you have made things easier for Dean and his family. It is humbling and much appreciated.

Dean still is not ready to be overwhelmed by visitors but I have conveyed all your thoughts, prayers and well wishes to him.

Dean looks better every day, that being said he will still have months of surgeries ahead. Tonight they removed his trach and will observe it for 24 hours but feel that he is doing just fine without it. He is very much so looking forward to a shower & his 1st real meal (which will be applesauce) at 9pm tonight. He will have pureed foods (smoothies, mashed potatoes etc) for at the very least 2 months. yum yum, pureed hamburgers.

They mentioned the possibility of him being moved to a physical therapy facility as soon as Monday.

Dean is out of the I.C.U! He is in the trauma ward and is making rapid progress. He is talking and is cogent. If he continues to make progress like this, he'll be ready for visitors soon.

This site was not set up by Vickie, but she gives me regular updates. She has asked me to let you know how loved and supported she feels by you all.

Dean has been able to talk the past couple of days. Tiahna and Vickie have had brief conversations with him.

Today Dean will have another surgery. I believe on his upper palate and sinuses.

Vickie and Tiahna are visiting Dean every day. Justice is at Oregon State so is coming when he can. The family is feeling so blessed by the support of the community. Thanks to all of you who are caring for them!
