The Story

Somaly Hay came to the United States as a refugee from Cambodia where she was a Royal Court dancer before more than half of her family including her parents, died in the communist Khmer killing field’s war.

Over 30 years of performing and teaching dance took its toll on her knees and prompted her to seek out new ventures.  In addition to her talent as a choreographer, she and her husband Khan opened a shop on Golden Street selling her handbags, jewelry and products made in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Like a lot of small business owners, they have limited resources and the hospital bills alone are enough to take your breath away.

To all my friends, customers, donors, and anonymous donors,

Sir and Madam,

I am so grateful. Your donations toward my medical expenses are greatly appreciated, and also your kind words that help to remind me to be proud of whom I am. You lift me up and help me to stay strong…all those encouraging messages lighten my days.

Some of you don’t need to give but do it anyway, some of you have so much compassion, some of you have been helping me since the start of my life here as a refugee, some of you give with tears because your hearts are full of empathy, some of you give because you had been there before me. All those acts will be engraved in my heart forever.

May this New Year bring you and yours all everlasting happiness and prosperity.

May the merit of your generosity act as the bridge to bring you to the right direction for this life time and the next.

Take care,
Somaly Hay and Family
