The Story

We are heartbroken to share that Kelsey passed away on Saturday evening, April 18.  She came home from Banner UMC on Thursday and spent her remaining time in her home, with her family. We pray for the Lurias, as well as everyone whom Kelsey touched.

With Kelsey's passing, the family will be working to bring some of Kelsey's dreams for helping other teens diagnosed with leukemia -- to ease their burden a bit -- to life.  You can learn more and support these plans at You can make a tax-deductable contribution there.

Sweet Kelsey Luria has been in one hospital or another since November 4, 2014, with almost no respite. She has been fighting AML leukemia with every ounce of her being. Kelsey has endured four rounds of chemotherapy - always with the attitude of a warrior, and now she needs our help.

Her journey has been difficult, and her disease is complex.  Though she has suffered complications and set backs, her path had been moving forward.

Unfortunately, recent weeks have tested her.  Kelsey, and her family, need our financial support.  The last several weeks have been the most difficult, and Kelsey has far to go before she can rest.

Kelsey has been getting excellent care from the doctors and nurses at Banner UMC, but with her recent, multi-system complications, they recognized that she needs even more specialized attention.

On April 2, a team from UCLA flew to Tucson to pick up Kelsey and take her to Los Angeles in a specially equipped medical jet.  Michael and Maya had to fly over, alone, to meet her.  The very best doctors continue to attend to her life-threatening liver and cardiac complications, while managing the rest of her fragile state.  She will be in UCLA's pediatric intensive care unit for a while where she is in the fight of her life.

Michael and Maya are committed to being with Kelsey, and this will require travel to and from LA; looking after Max, a freshman at Catalina Foothills High School; and even more absences from work.  Travel and medical expenses are mounting.

Donating here is easy and gives you the ability to immediately help the family, no matter where you are.  NOTE- you do not have to pay a fee to donate.  Under your gift amount, just click the "Optional Payments to YouCaring's operating costs" and enter $0."

If you are in Tucson, you can also visit any Wells Fargo location and support the Lurias with a deposit into the B+ Team Kelsey/Kelsey Luria account.  Just ask the teller to look up the account under Michael Luria's name.  The last five digits of the account are 50639Many thanks to the folks at Wells Fargo for their support.

Again...thank you for your help.  It is so appreciated.

Here is Michael's update from April 7:

"FORWARD PROGRESS:  Today has been a good day.  Kelsey was successfully extubated and is off the ventilator.

Thankfully her liver is healing well.  Kelsey has had 3 days of improvement with respect to her liver function.  While she has a very long way to go, she is "out of the woods" and on the path to recovery.  This is a tremendous relief - we are so greatful!

The news we have been hoping, waiting and praying for has finally come.  Kelsey is officialy in remission from AML!  Her bone marrow biopsy results came back this morning and there is no evidence of leukemia.

As elated and grateful as we are, the wodnerful news about the cancer being in remission is somewhat mitigated by the reality of the significant cardiac challenges Kelsey still faces.  This journey is not over yet.  Your love, support and prayers have lifted our spirits, filled our hearts, and helped Kelsey weather these most recent crisis.  THANK YOU!"

You are all so wonderful!  Thank you! Thank you ! Thank you!

Your support and generousity is awesome and inspiring.  Kelsey continues to fight hard at UCLA where she remains intubated and resting.  Her number one issue remains the liver issues, and daily labs will be very revealing.  But right now it is a wait and see stage.  There is ever so slight improvement, not much, but also no woresening.

Please keep your positive thoughts and prayers coming!  And thank you for all of your help and sharing!
