The Story

Charlie did what we hope our own dog would do in the same situation.  She defended her family when an intruder entered their home.  Charlie and two of her canine siblings ran after the intruder and then the intruder fired four shots at the dogs as he ran off.  Two of the bullets hit Charlie, one in her front right leg and the other her back right leg.  Her owner told us "If Charlie had not taken the bullet, it would have hit one of my children." Because her family does not have the resources to pay for an expensive surgery and they were caught up in the moment of chaos, they felt they had no option other than to tearfully let the police officer take Charlie to the shelter, hoping she would get the care she needs.  They desperately want Charlie, who has been a part of their lives since shee was a puppy, back and we want to help make that happen. The North Central Shelter Intervention Program is set up to keep pets with the families who love them. If we can raise the money for Charlie's surgery, she can be reunited with the family she loves so much that she risked her life to save them.  Her front right leg has a compound fracture low on the humerus that requires a complicated surgery or possible amputation. Her back right leg has a deep laceration that needs treatment.  Please help us raise the funds to help this loyal and heroic dog get the care she needs.  And reunite her with her family! She misses them very, very much Every little bit helps.

Fundraiser Updates

We visited Charlie and her family yesterday to take some photos and were thrilled that she is doing so well at home.  She is being well taken care of and is very much loved.  And she is already finessing walking around on three legs!  Her family was overwhelmed with gratitude for all who cared and chipped in to save Charlie.  Soon Charlie will get to start playing with her canine siblings again. We learned when we visited her that one of her sibling dogs tried to push Charlie back to the family home after she was shot since Charlie had chased the intruders into the street!  We are so happy to see her back home and smiling with her family.

Charlie is home!  She stayed at the hospital for 2 nights so that they could manage her pain.  Charlie would still not walk at ASEC and the vet said that dogs usually do best when they are back in their home environemnt.  And it is true.  Charlie's owner told us that once Charlie got home and saw the children she got up and started walking.  We are gong to visit her on Monday and brining her a nice, big comfy dog bed and will get photos.   Thank you all for your support!!

We spoke with Dr. Somerville and Charlie did great with her surgery!  She is staying an extra night at ASEC so they can help manage her pain and then she will get to go home tomorrow.  Thank you for all your support!

Charlie is out of the shelter!  She was reunited with her family and she was so, so excited!  We then drove her to Animal Speciality Emergency Clinic where she met with Dr. Somerville.  They carefully reviewed her x-rays and decided the best plan was amputation due to her shattered bones from the close range bullet.  3 legged dogs do just fine so we are not worried about Charlie!  She will spend a night or two at the vet and then be heading home.

Charlie is all set for her surgery!  Her owners are coming to adopt her back tomorrow and then we are driving to ASEC for a consultation about her surgery.  The Doctor looked at her x-rays and syas it will be a complicated surgery and they are not sure yet if she will be able to keep her leg.  Charlie will stay at ASEC getting the care she needs pre-surgery.  We will take lots of photos and post!  Thanks again for all your support!  Her family is overwhelmed with the generosity as are we.
