For background on Allison's condition:
Allison Miller remains in critical condition in the University of Madison, WI hospital in the Trauma and Life Support Center. She developed double pneumonia the weekend of March 6th and it quickly progressed to her being unable to breathe on her own. Her body did not respond to treatment, and she went into septic shock, was heavily sedated, and intubated. Then, on Sunday, March 9th, after not improving, doctors decided to put her on ECMO - a technique of providing both cardiac and respiratorysupport to patients whose heartand lungsare so severely diseased or damaged that they can no longer serve their function.
Allison went into surgery the morning of March 10th and they amputated her left leg above the knee because where the ECMO line was in, it was unable to get the blood down to her leg. What you can do to help Allison:
After surgery, doctors narrowed down their treatment plan to tackle the virus and better address the staph infection.
Since then, Allison has made major improvements and continues to inspire us all! She's been off the ECMO machine since March 15th and her heart is holding steady. Her lungs are looking much better too and CT scans of her brain continue to come back clear. March 20th the doctors performed a tracheotomy to replace the lung tube she has had for the last eleven days with a more manageable long term airway connection. This will help support future lung improvement. She continues to open her eyes and is more aware of all her loved ones visiting her.
She is still on a ventilator and receiving dialysis at this point.
We are all simply stunned and amazed at her progress. Allison is a fighter and as you all keep reminding her of this, she continues to get stronger.
Thank you so much for all your messages and support!!
