Alessandro was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in August 2007, shortly before his 25th birthday. It was scary for him, his family and his future wife, Marilena, as no one knew what the future would hold. In 2010, he and Marilena were married and since that time, they have lived every day trying to get to know a disease that is constantly changing. In only a few years, Alessandro went from walking with a cane, then a walker, and now is fully relying on a mobility scooter in order to get around.
In 2012, Alessandro's increased loss of mobility made it impossible for him to work at his then-job as a bank teller. But Alessandro turned his focus on what he could do despite his limitations, and he went back to school to get his teaching certificate. He is almost done with that program and will finish in the top of his class with a 3.9 GPA.
Just as Alessandro was feeling confident about life in a scooter, he began losing hand function in 2014 due to severe tremors. He cannot drive or help with chores and he needs Marilena’s help showering, getting dressed, eating, drinking, playing records (which is a passion of his), and most other things that involve hand coordination.
For all of the obstacles Alessandro and Marilena deal with due to this terrible disease, they have managed to get by and have been able to maintain a positive outlook, although not always easy.
In the past year, Alessandro and Marilena have needed a variety of medical equipment that was not covered by insurance, including a handicap accessible van, portable ramps, a new scooter, a lift recliner, and more. This fundraiser is aimed at helping to supplement the loss of Alessandro's income and helping them acquire medical equipment that will increase Alessandro's quality of life.
Thank you for your support!
