Aloha! A new YouCaring fundraiser has been set up, so please follow us there. The YouCaring payment process changed and we had to start fresh with a new fundraiser. The new one is specifically for Kalani's trip to Mexico.
You will find a great new video with one of Kalani's songs at:
Thanks for your support and continued prayers and contributions.
Big News - New Hope! Watch the video for more info. Kalani has been getting a little better, and then getting a lot worse. New Goal: $30K in additional funds for state of the art treatment center asap. There are almost 500 people who have contributed to this so far. Can you do $25 more? $50 more? If can, can. Please. We will be almost to $30K.
Excerpts from a letter by Shadi Ramey, a good friend of Kalani and Julie:
There is an amazing place with outstanding physicians that might possibly be able to change his life. He might be able to find relief and not live in daily pain. Our goal is to help Kalani to have this opportunity. To spread love and ask for help. We might be able to save Kalani! I have to believe that we can. After all, hope is what makes us wake up and face the dawn after our darkest hours. This his is what our human family is all about.
What We Are Raising The Money For:
Kalani has a debilitating neurological disease that needs treatment and he has the opportunity to go to Sanoviv Medical Institute. Sanoviv Medical Institute is a state-of-the-art, fully-licensed hospital that offers a unique blend of conventional, alternative, and integrative programs. They have had a lot of success with their treatments of neurological issues.

Here is a link to their website:
As far as specialized treatment centers go, it is reasonably priced, however it is still expensive. We are requesting help to offset the cost of treatment.
If you have any questions or would like more information about Sanoviv my coordinator, DJ, is happy to answer them. Her direct line is 801-403-5131 or you can call 800-726-6848 ask for DJ and she will return your call.
Thank you for your prayers, thoughts and contributions. Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you.

Kalia here, writing you from rainy Pa'auilo. Kalani is heading to an appointment with his neurologist and it seemed like a good time to share a little of what's been happening here.
Even though things are rough, I've been pleasantly surprised to find that he's still making off-color jokes and blowing our minds in one fell swoop. On some level, not much has changed. That said, it's a day to day journey with many ups and downs and it's still quite uncertain where it's all heading...
Kalani always says "you can't play at community". Being here, you can really see what he means. Not only are Julie, Sarah, Kaleo and Chris working tirelessly to make sure he's taken care of, so many people are stepping up and offering what they can - whether it's a good laugh, a chicken pot pie, fresh veggies from the farm or extra help on writing a grant. It's those relationships that are keeping him going, quite literally.
He is still working like a madman, making things happen. His organization, Olohana Foundation (http://olohana.org/
), is doing such important work on climate mitigation and adaptation and bringing indigenous wisdom into high level conversations about where we go from here. They're establishing 'ulu food forests and creating curricula based on traditional modes of teaching. And so much more! This whole experience has pushed him to share the burden of the work. A team of impressive folks is assembling around him and no doubt it will take at least a dozen people to do what he's been doing single-handedly. With every piece of the work he's able to pass on, he seems to get a little lighter and a little stronger. It's making us think a lot about succession and the intergenerational transfer of knowledge. We're working hard to make it so he doesn't have to do the heavy lifting, but sticks around to show us how.
This Saturday, May 14, is Kalani's birthday! We thought it would be fun for Kalani to hear from you - so if you feel like it, shoot a little video of yourself saying hey to Kalani, telling a story, sharing something about your relationship with him. You can post your video on his facebook wall or upload it to youtube and email the link to [email protected].
Nothing fancy. It will be a surprise for Kalani's birthday. He likes surprises.
All the love and support you have offered has made a world of difference. Really truly. It's still a struggle and will continue to be, but knowing you all are out there, and having the energetic and financial support from you matters deeply and makes the day to day challenges a little smoother.
So much gratitude to you.
