The Story

Captain Dern was critically  injured while venting a roof on a two story house fire. Pete fell through a collasped roof into a burning garage. Within minutes he was was rescued but not without sustaining 2nd and 3rd degree burns to over 60% of his body. Pete is currently in the Burn unit at Community hospital with a very long road ahead of him. Pete's wife, daughter, mother, sisters and family, alongside of his fire family are with him.  Pete is a well respected Captain as well as a loved friend . His recovery will be long and will need Kelly and his daughter as much as possible.  Our hearts are broken and helping Kelly to stay at his side is most important. This donation is to make it possible for Kelly and her daughter to stay by his side as long as he needs them to. We thank you!

As a family we would like to clarify some information put out by the news media after Pete's press conference on July 10th . We are aware that the media stated that YouCaring funds were being donated to the Burn Center. While we are immensely grateful for the incredible staff and care that we are receiving, the thoughtful and generous donations made on the YouCareing website, so that I can be by Pete's side throughout his long road to recovery, will be used as intended.

We would also like to personally thank those that donated directly to the Burn Center in Pete's name.

Thank you,
The Dern Family

Update:

The new batch of grown skin ( CEA) from Boston arrived this morning. At 9:00 am the doctors took Pete into surgery. They took grafts from his lower back and shoulder and stretched them 4 to 1 and placed one on his scalp. Then they covered the graft with the CEA.

They took the other skin graft and placed it on an open wound on his shin. The doctors then put the CEA on the shin wound and smaller open wounds on the tops of his legs.

The wound in his abdomen is smaller and has new granulation tissue. Hopefully it will continue to heal.

The doctors said that Pete's left hand looks great. The autografts are taking and all of the tendons are covered. They did a lot of joint manipulation in the OR, working on movement. His right hand is still very swollen. They are talking about using compression bandages to help the swelling go down.

Pete was in a lot of pain, which is very unusual. He usually only takes Motrin but needed something stronger this afternoon. - Kelly

Update:

Pete had a great day. After physical therapy he was able to sit in a wheel chair and go outside. He sat in the courtyard with some friends and visited for a little while. There was a nice cool breeze and Pete said it felt fantastic. It really lifted his spirits. - Kelly
