The Story

(ETA: To be honest, I didn't think I'd be able to meet the initial goal of $5,000, much less the $8000 second goal! Thank you all. Also to note- this site does allow donations beyond the goal, and I'm not too proud to turn away any help I can get.  I will send out updates and hopefully I'll be back up and on my feet by October-November.)

Hi Everyone,

This April I was diagnosed with B-cell Mediastinal Lymphoma.  It's a funky sub-sub-type of Lymphoma that grows quick and fast.

For about a month and a half I had been feeling pretty sick and my voice was gone for much of that time - the initial doctor's visit labeled it "post-nasal drip", well...

I was walking home from work when I suddenly passed out on the street - turns out the cancer was the size of a fist wrapped around my upper heart and pressing on several nerves in my throat.  My heart rate was 125-150 a minute - laying down - I was basically jogging a marathon 24/7 just to get the blood and oxygen through my body.

I spent nearly all of April in the hospital, and am very fortunate that new science and research released that month included a chemotherapy treatment with a 97% cure rate for this type of cancer.  That said, I'm going through a full 8 rounds of chemotherapy, each round being a full week in the hospital on intense drugs, with 2 weeks at home to try to recuperate between bouts.

I've been very lucky to have my sister, and several friends help me with food, car rides and home care, but I haven't been able to work since March, and things like rent and medical bills need to get paid.

Thanks for anything you can give, including well wishes and prayers.

Chris

ETA: Wow, thank you everyone for your generosity!  I can't believe the goal was met within less than 24 hours!  This site does allow for donations above the goal, and additional funds will be also used for medical costs, and to reimburse some of the people who have been supporting me during this time.

Fundraiser Updates

Hi everyone!

Life has been tough and good.  I'm still at maybe 60% physical ability from before cancer, but it's enough to go around and do daily things.  I've begun doing volunteer work at one of the museums, and I've been job hunting as the funds are reaching an end and the disability payments have ended (if you know any good admin work in the Bay, let me know!)

It's very weird! Aside from the initial diagnosis, I do have to say I'm more stressed over stupid things like worrying about getting back into work, than I was for many of those months of cancer.

That's not to say there wasn't a lot of stressful moments ("Will I have the strength to stand in the line at the hospital?" for example) but the large scale issue of "CANCER, BAD" was pretty much relegated to "either I survive or I don't, and there's not much more to get from worrying about it", while stuff like job hunting looms over your head.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the help!  I'll definitely update again when things get settled down, finally.

Chris

Results from the 3rd scan came in.  In January, it was about mango-pit sized, now it's about avacado pit sized.  So that's a good sign!

Exercise has continued, my strength and low-effort endurance is good, it's mostly an issue about cardio and stuff involving more activity where I burn out quick.

Now it's time to start trying to get back into working and paying bills and living life.  Step by step!

Thanks everyone for supporting and helping me survive this.
