The Story

What Happened?

On October 5, 2013 Dr. Ronald Hall was swimming in the Pacific Ocean at
Laguna Beach, CA with some friends and family. He was only in the
water 10 minutes when a powerful wave picked him up from behind and toppled him
over, hitting the sandy bottom and breaking his neck and back in 2
places.  He was paralyzed immediately and began to call for help under
water.

His friend pulled him out of the water and when he laid him on
the sand Ron had stopped breathing and turned blue.  By the
time the helicopter air lifted him to the trauma center, he was
considered a drowning victim because he had ingested a large amount
of sea water and sand.  He was admitted to the Intensive Care
Unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Mission Viejo, CA, had surgery to fix
the broken bones, and was in a medically induced coma for 4 days.

Meanwhile Linda, his wife, was in the northeast US doing a series of
sewing events when she got the news.  She flew to CA
immediately and the Halls spent the next 5 weeks in the Intensive Care
Unit.

Ron struggled through 2 surgeries to rebuild the bones in his
spine and to regain his health until stable enough to be air lifted
back to a hospital in Seattle, near where they recently moved this
past summer of 2013.  It just so happens that the University of
Washington Medical Center Spinal Cord Rehabilitation there in Seattle
is the model for other centers in the country and the best possible
place he can be to recover the use of his body again.

He will be living in the hospital for weeks, possibly months before he is
ready to live at home again. He is still paralyzed but has feeling and some
movement throughout his body and in all his extremities.  The doctors
think he will walk again someday but it will be a long, slow process.

How You Can Help

This is where you come in.  There has been an outpouring of love,
cards and prayers from people who know Dr. Hall from all over the
world.  Many have asked how they can help during this difficult time.
Maybe he has been your Pastor, your Professor, Counselor or your
friend in need.   He has ministered to you in the past and now needs
your ministry more than ever.

The Halls do have health insurance but this does not cover many
out-of-pocket expenses that they are facing already.  Aside from the
hospital bills already mounting, Dr. Hall will need continuing medical
care at home to bring his legs and his arms back so he can walk, use
his computer and cell phone, and minister once again.

Any messages of encouragement to Ron or Linda you can send along
with your donations will make an incredible difference at this critical
time in their lives.

Let’s bring Dr. Hall back to ministry once again!

A Note From Linda.....

"As I look forward into this new year and I look back on the 2015 I cannot help but be amazed at all that God has helped us do and has done with us and for us in the past year. 1 year ago at the end of 2014 as we looked into 2015 we had no idea we would be moving to North Carolina that I would be able to travel so much with my job. I would be able to bring Ron with me to some of my events and that we would so see so much of our family this year. Judy Wentland came and helped us, we’ve had several caregivers work with us who absolutely love Ron and seem to have been blessed by working with Ron. We have seen two new grand baby girls born, I’ve made several quilts and new ideas and new projects this year. It seems like the things that I had to give up when we lived in Seattle have all been given back to us in full measure. We were able to be with our family, I was able to invent new art, I was able to travel with Tacony and keep my job, we were able to make money, Ron was able to work with online classes and teach more classes and make more money than I ever thought possible. We live in a beautiful neighborhood in a beautiful city in a beautiful part of the country. The pace is a bit slower here and it’s perfect for us. We can walk down to the water and enjoy a beautiful waterfront with trees and Ron can practice walking on the boardwalk. Ron drives his power chair down to the waterfront and I get my walk in.

My tendency is to be fearful about 2016 because that is my default internal attitude. But when I see what God did in our lives in 2015 I can’t help but be excited about what will happen in 2016. I have to dare to believe that God will give me the desires of my heart- the ability for both Ron and I to find meaningful work that doesn’t stress us out and exhaust us, that we will be able to be with family and that we will be able to enjoy life again. I pray that Ron would recover more and more so that he’s not in pain and stiffness and uncomfortable everyday. He is not yet able to walk much at all and we need a miracle for that to happen but we have been able to overcome so much adversity this year and God has provided and protected every step of the way - I dont know why I am surprised but I wondered how we would ever survive this tragedy. Not only have we survived we are thriving and enjoying all of our family coming to visit at one time or other this year in Charlotte, NC. Thank you all for your continued prayers as we enter the 3rd year of this journey to wholeness again."

Race to Walk- A note from Ron

"I want to thank all of you for your prayers and support over these past 22 months. Having a spinal cord injury is no walk in the park. I continue to make gains and then other areas are very slow and very frustrating for me. Those of you that know me understand my energy level was very high and now the challenges are so many.

I've now been going to Race to Walk (www.racetowalk.org). They are helping me in incredible ways. The equipment and the specialization of the trainers to deal with people with spinal cord injuries is the best I've ever seen. They are compassionate to help you work through the issues that you're facing.

They have been able for the first time to get me to be on my stomach to do exercises and stretch my lower back my upper body and get me up on my elbows and starting on my knees.. They placed me on vibrating platforms to stimulate my nerves and move my legs and arms in ways that are so needed as part of my recovery, and much more.

It is sad, but insurance does not cover this place and if you check out the website you'll have to call into question the medical profession and insurance companies not being willing to include places like this. Gifts are needed for me to continue to participate. Please pray that provision will come in so that I can continue to participate in the program. Thank you all!!"~Ron

Keeping busy and working hard!

I apologize for not getting an update out sooner! Ron and Linda have been pretty busy! Family and friends have done such an amazing job helping Ron and Linda getting settled into their new home. It is a blessing that they live so close to Jenn’s family and we cannot thank Judy (a family friend) enough for staying and helping out for a few weeks. Ron and Linda have been traveling quite a bit with the company that Linda is working for. Ron is still working very hard on walking, but he is doing a great job keeping up with Linda :) They have traveled to Pennsylvania, where they got to meet up with old friends and see Trevor and Erin, who are expecting a baby girl any day now! Ron has been teaching online classes, which is the perfect set-up for him. They just returned from Pensacola, where they were able to visit with Justin, Jenn and Collin. Justin and Jenn are expecting a baby girl in November! That will bring the grandchildren total to five!

Linda has been having a great time teaching with Baby Lock Sewing Company and appreciates all the support and prayer from them during this difficult time. Because of all the traveling Linda has been doing, they have hired a part-time caregiver for Ron named Tony. Tony has been a huge blessing and has helped to take some of the burden off Linda.   Ron has been using a scooter but is hoping to be able to walk again. We ask for prayer for a breakthrough with Ron’s therapy. The doctors will be changing medications and therapies to try and find the right things that will work for Ron.

I would like to share with you some thoughts from Linda’s father, Gordon Upton:

“That Ron’s life was spared on that occasion is a miracle in itself, and also that it happened in an area where Linda could stay with Aunt Hilda while Ron was at the trauma center in Mission Viejo. The journey since that time has been an up-and-down experience of miracle, disappointment, and joy intermingled, but through it all, we can see the very evident hand of God working on our behalf in so many ways, large and small, to bring us to point where we are today.

Though they have been severely tested, Ron and Linda have demonstrated a profound faith in God and know that He is working through every situation to bring about His purposes. The Word of God has always been the source of our guidance and strength, and it is at times like these that we are able to prove the reality of our faith, with the absolute confidence that His promises are dependable and true. We are reminded about what God has said in Psalm 37:23: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.” He orders every step we take in life, even though we may not always clearly understand the direction He takes us.

It is also comforting to realize that God has placed a limit on the tests we may face. 1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us: “No temptation (test) has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted (tested) beyond what you are able, but with the temptation (test) will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

That God has us in “His sights” surely cannot be denied. In Isaiah 55:8-9 we read: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.””

We pray that you are all doing well and we thank you all for your support and prayer!!
