The Story

Addilyn Grace Roberts (Addie)

Hometown: Elizabethtown, KY
Parents: Ben and Angela Roberts
Sister(s): Audrie Faith Roberts (18 months old) -- Also, Mommy has a sister in the oven. (Due February 2, 2014)

For those who may be curious... This child named Addie has always been strong and healthy; the normal full of life little girl. Never once has she had anything more than a common runny nose. But....

On September 23, 2013, this little girl was diagnosed with Pre-B ALL Leukemia. This all started a couple days prior with a fever and a few red dots on her left arm. The ER said she had a virus and to keep an eye on her through the weekend. Monday morning came around, and lil miss Addie was feeling 100% better but now complaining that her ear hurt. We took her to the pediatrician to make sure she didn't catch an ear infection. Doctor Flynn was worried about the red dots and after a quick blood test, she sent us to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY. Having been warned what the worst case could be from our pediatrician, you can only imagine what our thoughts were during that car ride. Nearly 2 hours later we arrived at the Oncology floor with emotions in high gear. After getting settled into a room, we had to talk to many doctors and nurses about her symptoms while they started an IV in miss Addie. Now the emotions were at an all time high while the nurses were drawing what seems like a gallon of blood from Addie's arm to send off for testing....Now, it was time to wait.... The experts said there were several bad infections that could cause her blood counts to be down the way they were.... but they also said Leukemia patients had the same blood counts when first diagnosed. Now.... This horrible day just turned into the possibility of being the worst day of our life. Pacing across the room for what seemed like days....Praying.....crying.....hoping....

5:58 pm...
The door opens. With a small voice... "Please come with us..."

6:00 pm Monday, September 23, 2013.
The exact time and date the world stopped turning for us...
They had found cancer cells in her blood and that she has Pre-B ALL Leukemia. They said they believe the cancer just started within the last couple weeks. They also said the survival rate was 85-90% with children between the ages of 1-10 years old. This statistic brings great hope....

God, give these surgeons and doctors the knowledge and steady hands to cure Addilyn. Give us the courage as parents to make it through this journey... and last but definitely not least..... give Little Miss Addie the strength it takes to make this journey and never let her spirit be broken. Let her smile brighten everyone along the way... AMEN.
