The Story

The lovely Guatemalan-American queer femme unicorn writer Maya Chinchilla, author of The Cha-Cha Files: A Chapina Poética (Kórima Press, 2014) was in a car accident on October 28,2015. She has multiple fractures in her legs and will have a long recovery involving several orthopedic surgeries and months of rehab.

To give Maya the time and care she needs to recover from the accident and support her we, her family, friends and fans are coming together to raise enough money to cover living expenses, costs related to the accident, and additional therapy for a year.

Maya has inspired us with her strong heart, her kindness, her unicorn wit and commitment to social justice. Now we are gonna inspire her to keep going through these tough times, to frolic and, one day, to dance in cute heels. Go Maya!

Si se puede!

The Maya Chinchilla Support Fund is being administered by Brava! For Women in the Arts, a San Francisco-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that produces, presents, and cultivates the artistic expression of women, people of color, youth, LGBTQ and other underrepresented voices. All donations to the fund are tax-deductible.

Fundraiser Updates

Hello loves, this is a quick update to share with you that I am in need of raising more funds as I prepare for my next two surgeries. I have been going diligently to physical therapy, swimming and even dancing (from the waist up but it's still dancing!) I have been living most of the time in Santa Cruz with the lovely support of my partner but I am working on being able to get back to my 2nd floor apartment. I am walking with the help of crutches and my walker (named walker texas ranger) and still have to use my wheel chair from time to time.

My healing has been going really well but I have hit a plateau and am in need of full knee replacement in my right knee. I am asking for your help so I can pay my rent and buy medical supplies. With the initial amount raised I was able to get a ramp built at my lovely partners house, pay for some medical bills and keep my apartment. I am now hoping to raise another $10,000 to get me through the last phase of recovery and regain my independence. I am also working on a wish list of exercise and medical equipment in case you have things that you might not be using but that I can use to get back on my cute swollen feet!

Thank you for all the support and love you already have offered. I especially have to thank you for the kind messages and letters you sent. They really got me through the hardest part of this journey!

If have the capacity you know what to do....and even sharing my story if it helps others or others have the capacity to support please do share.

Thank you Thank you Thank you.

What an amazing response - thanks to all of you who have shared and given so far. We have raised enough so that Maya won't have to worry about making rent for the rest of the year! This relieves a lot of stress, and helps us all focus on the work of healing - pasito a pasito.

Maya is a little out of it today from pain meds, but has very much enjoyed the cards, messages and visits she's been receiving. Her aunt helped her get connected again by getting her phone back and now Maya has a laptop to work on too. Her mom, sister, aunt, dad and stepmom have been at her side, as have I. We were all delighted to see Maya get into a wheelchair last Friday and see the sky for the first time in 2 weeks. She is working hard on her mobility and independence and very happy to be in physical therapy.

Last Thursday, Maya posted that she was feeling a little down and hoping to see the sky again soon, which made sitting in the sun on Friday with her and her mom Norma that much more special. So we will keep going, pasito a pasito. We are waiting for the fourth surgery and then making plans for where she will go after that. It looks like she will be in the hospital for about another week. Thanks to everyone who has offered words of encouragement or advice meanwhile.

Mientras tanto, please keep on sharing the fundraiser, and if you're in the Bay Area, consider attending Marga Gomez's performance of her one-woman show, POUND at Brava! Theater on Nov. 22. Marga has dedicated the proceeds of the show to Maya's healing fund. Here's the event information: https://www.facebook.com/events/1645365765722794/

Mil gracias!
