The Story

In December 2016, after experiencing mysterious periodic symptoms of fatigue and numbness, Matty Sheets was diagnosed with MS by a neurologist.  The news has not only come as a shock to Matty and the many folks who love him, but also presented him with an overwhelming number of medical bills and other care expenses.

Matty is a prolific musician, having played in countless Greensboro bands simultaneously over the years, as well as a relentless supporter of both budding and experienced musicians within the local music scene.  He has hosted Greensboro’s longest running Open Mic for over 13 years and currently plays in Matty Sheets and the Cold Rollers, Magpie Thief, Sugar Meat, Laila Nur and the Love Riot, and The Fumblemuckers, among other groups.  His endless support for his community has inspired us to return the favor.

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, “Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The cause of MS is still unknown – scientists believe the disease is triggered by as-yet-unidentified environmental factor in a person who is genetically predisposed to respond. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted.”

As he is known to do with most obstacles in life, Matty is responding to this lofty news with inspiring optimism, determination, enthusiasm, forward motion and appreciation for those who love and support him.  He has wasted no time educating himself about nutrition strategies that have helped others, including medical professionals, slow and stop the progression of MS symptoms, and he has already substantially altered his diet.  He has also gained quite a bit of insight on self-care from his mother, who has been engaged in her own battle with MS for 20 years. While Matty is in good spirits, he also really needs our help. As he says in his song, “Rough Times,” “I don't know where I'd be without my friends around.”

We are launching this fundraising campaign to help with the costs of MRI testing, doctor visits, medicine, vitamins, supplements, dietary changes, gym/pool membership, holistic care, transportation to and from doctor appointments, and other needs that arise related to his condition.  It has also become apparent that unexpected injuries may arise from his condition from time to time, possibly necessitating additional medical care.  As you can imagine, all of the wildcard factors with MS make it very difficult to predict how much financial support will be needed, but we are confident that any donations above and beyond the goal listed here will also be put to good use for Matty’s care.

Here's a message from Matty:

"I am speechless, humbled, grateful, and a little overwhelmed. I truly don't know where I'd be without my friends around. Thank you all so much. I thought the video was gonna make me feel uncomfortable, but it made me very proud. I'm so lucky to know such amazing people. Thank you all so much. I love you with everything I have.  The Guided B.S. podcast goes up today [Listen to the podcast here.] and you can hear me talk all about it with Tara and Jessica if you're interested. I think it's gonna be really good.

"Thank you Emily Stewart, Donna Smith, Randy Seals, Jess Jess Yall, Suzanne Stafford, Kit Dean, Molly McGinn, Barry Staples, Matthew Goshow, Harrison Barrow, Hannah Samet, Laura Jane Vincent, OPOTW studios, and everyone who has pitched in, in any way to help.

"Ok, maybe I'm not totally speechless. Thank you all so much."
