On Dec. 29th Mason McCartan, Junior at CFHS, was involved in a sledding accident where he badly struck a tree. He was rushed to Satori Emergency Room where he was immediately transferred to U of Iowa Children's Hospital where he was admitted to the PICU. During Mason’s accident, he sustained 5 broken ribs, a collapsed lung, two fractures in his spine, a major skull fracture, several facial fractures, and a brain injury. He was intubated and sedated to allow his brain and body to heal. They recently took the breathing tube out and are starting the process of weening him off sedation. As he starts to wake up, his road to recovery begins. Mason will have an extensive rehabilitation process dealing with the brain injury and physical trauma. He will first be coming back to covenant until he is able to get his feeding tube removed. Then he has been accepted and plans on being admitted to a program called On with Life(http://www.onwithlife.org/about.aspx) as soon as his feed tube is removed. Mason will be staying at this hospital as he continues his road to recovery. Parent’s, Ron and Jen in turn will be taking a lot of time off work to be with Mason supporting his rehabilitation journey. They will be traveling back and forth from Ankeny to Cedar Falls to be with their other 2 sons in CF. On top of all the medical expenses, they are faced with travel and lodging expenses while helping Mason heal in Ankeny. I know we are a part of a great community that helps those in need. Right now Mason and his family are in need. Please help them out and show support to get Mason back on his feet! Your support is greatly appreciated by myself and his family. Mason McCartan is a Junior at the Cedar Falls High School and a member of the CFHS Wrestling and Baseball team. He is a funny, energetic kid with a strong drive & purpose in life. We know that together with our support he will get through the journey ahead!
