The Story

Your favorite worker-owned restaurant on UMD campus is threatened with closing its doors permanently. Due to unforeseeable crises and unprecedented corporate competition, they have seen a loss of inventory and sales.

In order to keep providing the community with healthy affordable meal options, well paying jobs, and community control of and access to food sources, they need your help.

The Maryland Food Collective has revitalized their store with a new seating area, a fledgling coffee bar and a stage for their famous open mic nights. They have further plans for a regular smoothie bar. These changes are allow them to stay relevant and remain a community hub for activism, personal connections and healthy, socially conscious consumption.

The Collective had to replace their sandwich line when it broke down over the summer and still has many old machines and fridges that need replace. The money received over the summer through this fund has gotten them through to today. The current generation of the co-op has inherited a large amount of debt that needs to be paid off to keep them from going out of business. Currently the debt keeps growing.

In addition to donating funds, this community owned institution is welcoming experienced business owner to donate their time as consultants to help them with sustainable business planning.

As one of the oldest still running worker co-ops in the country, it would be a shame to see The Maryland Food Collective have to shut its doors at such a crucial moment in history for cooperative economics.

Please donate to day to keep The Maryland Food Collective Alive for generations to come!

With all your help we have reached our first goal of $7,500! We weren't sure that this fundraiser would be effective, but all of the support and compassion pouring out of our community has proven to us how important the co-op is to our customers, volunteers, and workers, both past and present.
Your support has re-energized us and our vision for the future of the co-op. The $7,500 that we raised will help us stay afloat for awhile longer, but in order to really improve our store as much and as quickly as we want to, we will need more!
In this second phase of our fundraiser, we will be shooting for $15,000. We want to begin constructing our coffee and smoothie bar and ordering all the great new items our customers want us to carry. We also welcome any comments and suggestions of how you would love for the co-op to improve.
Please help us reach our $15,000 goal today!
