With your dedication, love, and support, we have surpassed our first goal of $20,000 for a down payment!
Because of your amazing solidarity, we feel confident that we can reach our ultimate goal of $200,000 to buy Casa Mariposa or a different property outright!
Please join Mariposas Sin Fronteras as we start our final campaign to buy a home. We have until December 31st to buy the current Casa Mariposa or a different property to continue to fight for the liberation of all LGBTQ immigrants in detention. Our goal is to raise $200,000 by the end of this year to ensure that there continues to exist a safe and secure home for the Tuscon immigrant community, and especially the LGBTQ immigrant community. Juntxs, sí se puede!
We invite you to continue supporting Mariposas Sin Fronteras, a local organization of queer and trans people impacted by the immigration detention system.
For about six years, Mariposas Sin Fronteras has worked toward ending the detention of LGBTQIJ+ individuals. We have fought for individuals’ release by providing letters of support and other legal resources to be used in immigration court so those on the inside have the tools to fight for their own liberation. Mariposas Sin Fronteras has paid 150,000 in bonds to release 27 people from detention over the past 6 years. In the last two years alone, Mariposas has bonded out 13 people, paying a total of 90,500 in bonds.
Why we need a home for Mariposas Sin Fronteras:
-To continue to provide address support letters which are extremely needed for detainees to be able to receive a bond.
In order for someone to be released from immigration detention, one essential step in the fight is proof that the person has housing and community support in the US. With our own space, Mariposas can provide these crucial letters.
-To provide a more permanent home in Tucson for detainees coming out of detention.
Having a short to long term home for individuals released from detention allows them to build community, get on their feet post detention, organize and build relationships with others who have also been affected by the immigration detention system.
-To have a legitimate space that is by POC LGBTQIJ+ individuals for POC LGBTQIJ+ individuals and others affected by the immigration detention system.
Providing a safe space for directly-impacted individuals makes possible the creation of solutions and efforts that can further the support and liberation of the directly-impacted communities.
-To have a more sustainable space that strengthens, nurtures, welcomes, accepts, and affirms POC LGBTQIJ+ organizing and leadership.
Which would allow us to increase:
-our regular visits to detention centers
-capacity to respond to letters from people who are detained
-capacity for following up on supporting documents needed for individuals’ release
-capacity to provide the documents and evidence people need to fight their own legal cases
Please support Mariposa Sin Fronteras continue the crucial work of queer and trans immigrant organizing in Tucson as it searches for a new space to gather and to host detainees coming out of immigration detention. Far too often, POC and LGBTQIJ+ led organizations are limited by structural lack of access to resources and autonomous spaces.
Having a space for ourselves will help us grow and strengthen the movement of POC LGTBQIJ+ leadership fighting to end the detention of immigrants, because, as Glenn Martin, formerly incarcerated activist and founder of LeadershipUSA says, “People closest to the problem are closest to the solution… and furthest from the resources”.
