The Story

On June 6th, Marcia Huhta’s life changed forever.

Marcia and Matti Huhta survived a head-on car collision. Marcia was rescued from the wrecked vehicle with the jaws of life and air-lifted to a hospital for life-saving spinal surgery. But months later, Marcia's in a wheelchair and has limited movement and sensation below her neck.

We're raising money to help Marcia get the medical care she needs to walk again.

Please donate—but if you can't, please SHARE THIS:

It’s not enough to just like or heart this — every share counts! Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn… fire up your MySpace again. YouCaring says that every share is worth about $37 on average, so if you can’t donate, please consider sharing this with your friends — and ask them to do the same!

Marcia Huhta is a loving mother of five children, grandmother to three, and great-grandmother to another two. She's a lector at All Hallows Church, which she attended daily. Marcia was also an officer in the local Finnish-American Heritage Society for years. She also worked as a nurse at the Villa Maria Nursing & Rehabilitation facility for over 3 decades. Marcia is adored by her family, patients, colleagues, and her local community.

But there's more: Marcia loves to dance. Square dances, waltzes, foxtrots, lindy hops, charlestons... watch this video of Marcia dancing a polka with Matti at her 50th wedding anniversary. She performed with the Revontulet Dancers, a non-profit Finnish dancing troupe in Massachusetts. Marcia has rhythm on her feet, a rhapsody in each step, but more than that she has grace—a rare gift given to someone who gave so much to her family, her patients, her church, and her community.

And now we're asking you to give her another gift: your donations. Marcia needs long-term care, the best treatments, and world-class physical therapy to walk again, to dance again, even to hold her great-grandchildren again. And these treatments are out of her and her husband's financial reach.

Your donations will pay for expenses like:
  • Colossal medical bills that have spiralled out of her family's control
  • Long-term care in a skilled nursing facility that provides physical and occupational therapy
  • Improved treatments and therapies focused on helping her build strength, reduce pain, and stay healthy
  • Technologies that connect her with family & friends, since she's unable to leave the facility she's in
  • Additional medical care, transport, consultants, treatments, and other needs
Please donate to support Marcia here on YouCaring. Your donation goes directly to Marcia and Matti Huhta and you’ll only be charged a credit card transaction fee. You can choose if you also want to support YouCaring or not.

Marcia Huhta’s life has changed forever, and we’re going to change it again—by getting her back on her feet. We want to see her walk, we want to see her dance, we want to see her hold her great-grandchildren again… but we need your help.

She’s coming home!

That’s right, friends, I’m so, so excited to announce that my mom is ready to come HOME.

Her goal was to get back into her own home before a full year passed since the accident, and she’s on her way to making that happen. Her tentative date to move back home is May 31st – just a few weeks away!

The Huhta family has been renovating the house and getting things in place to make sure Marcia is comfortable and can access everything. This includes things like updating the bathroom for her wheelchair, outfitting a van to transport her in her wheelchair, and many other things that will make her comfortable and safe.

Unfortunately, the costs for these things have wiped out the remaining funds we’ve raised. These aren’t luxuries or nice-to-haves—they’re necessities for Marcia to come home.

Marcia’s only made it this far because she’s working hard and getting the therapy she needs. And you’ve helped her at every step along her path to recovery.

My Mom has come so far thanks to you and your generosity. She’d be so grateful if you could pitch in a little more or even just share out this link to her YouCaring page:

Thank you for your support. Thank you for giving us hope. Thank you for helping Marcia walk.

Friends, I just talked with my Mom on the phone for the first time in a month and wow, OH WOW, did she have some amazing news to share!

Her physical therapy team had her standing at the parallel bars. Yes, that’s right: STANDING.

Her legs were supported in braces and support hose to insure her joints and muscles are safe. But she was out of the tilt table, which she had to use before to get in an upright position. Her next step will be to focus on maintaining her balance.

I asked my Mom how she felt afterward. She said:

“To be standing again, to see the world again from that angle—it’s just…AWESOME.”

Next up, they’ll have her working towards putting her feet one in front of the other, slowly but surely. She mentioned they are doing most of the work moving her feet for her. She doesn’t quite think of it as “actually walking,” but we think that every little step deserves celebration.

Marcia’s gotten this far because she’s working hard and getting the therapy she needs, but unfortunately it isn’t fully covered by her insurance. She—and we—would be so, so grateful if you could pitch in or even just share the link to her YouCaring page:

Hello Friends,

We hope your holiday season was filled with moments of joy and hope. Ours definitely was because Marcia was able to visit home for a few hours on Christmas Eve!

We celebrated our short time together by doing what Huhtas do best: eating, laughing, playing, and drinking a glass of wine (or two!). Just look at all those smiling faces in the photo we just added!

These joyful memories will keep Marcia smiling and working hard during her physical therapy sessions so that she can stay focused on her goal: transitioning back home permanently.

None of this would have happened without you, your support, and your boundless generosity. We’re truly surrounded by such generous souls.

Thank you for your support. Thank you for giving us hope. Thank you for helping Marcia walk.
