S.M.A.R.T. (Student Multiethnic Action Research Team) is a group of immigrant students and students of color who have come together to organize and fight for a quality education, immigrant rights, language justice, and any other issues our members raise.
"SMART has become like a family to me. It is a place where I learn to organize along with fellow high school students from DCPS. The wonderful thing about SMART is that although we come from different places, we face similar challenges and we can organize for the world we want" - Miguel Castro, SMART Alum.
Every summer SMART hosts the Summer Institute for Student Organizers (SISO). Around 15 to 20 students come to participate in a rigorous 6-week program that enhances their understanding of what is like to be a community organizer. They gain various skills such as how to recruit new members, organize actions/events, facilitate "Know Your Rights" sessions, learn how to lead and participate in campaigns, and create policy solutions.
Since November, MLOV and SMART members have been actively pressuring DC Government and Mayor Bowser to create a REAL sanctuary for all DC Residents! This has put some of our funding in jeopardy, funding that was needed to pay some of our SMART members for their participation and leadership in SISO.
We are calling the community to help us raise the remaining amount needed to pay three of our SMART members $800.00 each
IN SOLIDARITY, other participants have decided to withhold their paychecks until their fellow SMART members get paid.
At this point, we know that the more we organize, the more we cannot rely on the government for funding, and we can only rely on our community to support and keep our work alive.
Please helps us raise the money, spread the word about this online campaign, and raise awareness around the need to fund youth organizing groups like SMART DC! *** UPDATE: Given the recent announcement of DACA, we will also be collecting funds via this fundraiser to go to eligible local youth needing help to pay for their 2-year DACA renewals before the October 5th deadline. The application fee is $495. Anything raised above the $2400 needed to pay youth stipends will go to DACA renewal fees! ***
Finally: any donation of $50 or more will receive a very special copy of SMART DC youth's first "zine"!
Thank you for your support.
