PLEASE SUPPORT FRONTLINE WARRIORS AND HELP STOP LINE 3!
The Makwa Initiative is an Anishinaabe led group of water protectors building a community on piece of private property in Cloquet, Minnesota close to where the Line 3 pipeline is proposed to be constructed. There are around 50 of us right now and we are expecting more water protectors to come in the next few weeks/months. Much like Standing Rock, our group of water protectors live together, pray together and organize against the Line 3 pipeline, mainly using non-violent direct action. In the past month we have done 5 different actions that have halted Enbridge’s construction of the pipeline for hours at a time. All of our food, water, lumber, gas, supplies, etc. are being paid for out of pocket and by donations from friends, family and supporters. So, we are asking you to please support our frontline community here in Minnesota with money for supplies to survive the winter. Permits for the Minnesota section of the pipeline have not been approved yet, so we expect to be here for at least the next couple of months making sure that Enbridge does not get those permits, which would force the plans for Line 3 to be terminated.
Makwa means bear in Anishinaabe. We started this project to honor the bear we found killed by a pipeline truck on the side of the highway. We want to make sure no more have to be killed for this project. The Line 3 Replacement Pipeline is destroying their homes and ours. Line 3 is violating our treaty rights by polluting our waters, killing the animals, and destroying the habitat for our sacred plant medicine. The Line 3 Replacement Project is a 7.5 billion dollar pipeline project proposed to carry dirty crude oil from Alberta, Canada through the sacred lands, waters, and wild rice lakes of the Anishinaabe people to refineries in Superior, WI. Enbridge has planned this new pipeline to replace the existing 50 year old Line 3 Pipeline, which according to Enbridge Integrity Supervisor Laura Kennett is in “the deterioration stage…as external corrosion growth is increasing in an exponential fashion.” What’s important to remember is that even before this “deterioration stage” line 3 has always had a catastrophic effect on the environment. On March 3rd 1991 this particular pipeline caused the largest inland oil spill in US history, rupturing in Grand Rapids Minn. and spilling 1.7 million gallons of oil into the Prairie River. Rather than removing the leaking pipe, Enbridge plans to leave the old line 3 in the ground to rot and contaminate the water and soil, while simultaneously building a larger pipeline on the same easement. Unlike the old Line 3 this new pipe is permitted to carry tar sands oil, the dirtiest oil on the planet and almost a million barrels of it.
Late September has been full of thunderstorms and we are all working to weather proof our space so we can withstand the winter and continue to stop this pipeline from entering the lands of the Anishinaabe. As of now we don’t have running water, electricity, or wifi. This means we need to secure solar panels, converters, batteries, a large water tank, a truck capable of pulling it, and a wifi router. On top of that we need to enclose the kitchen, cover our wigwams with canvas, secure more wood stoves, find and cut firewood, and start to can for the winter. Setting up this camp requires us all to do all of this while also stopping the pipeline. We need your support to do this work. We need your support to put this infrastructure in place so we can last the winter. Please support the water protectors who have put their lives on hold to stop this pipeline. Please support the people on the ground. PLEASE SUPPORT FRONTLINE WARRIORS AND HELP STOP LINE 3!
