The Story

Louis and Heather Racicot have a combined 30 years experience serving their communities in countless capacities, Heather is a Service Representative for AFSCME representing public service workers all over the state, a 911 Dispatcher currently for the Town of East Lyme and an EMT. Lou is also a 911 Dispatcher for the town, a volunteer firefighter and paramedic. But none of that was able to stop their worst nightmares from coming true early Sunday morning. The family had just returned from a dream vacation with their son Ben, daughter Madi and loved ones to Disney on Saturday and were enjoying a well deserved night of sleep when they heard screams from an unknown man alerting them to fire in the home. A neighbor had seen the flames and was yelling 'fire' when a complete stranger who was passing by stopped, pulled his vehicle to the driveway, dialed 911 and kicked in the door to save them.

By the grace of God, Heather, their 2 year old daughter and the pets escaped safely and Lou sped to the task of putting out the fire, this time in his own home. No firefighting gear, bare feet standing on blown out glass and a garden hose in hand. He gained great ground with the flames and was assisted when Niantic and Flanders Fire Department members arrived. The fire had spread from the back of the home through the balloon frame construction to the roof and children's rooms upstairs. Their coworkers, their boss, their friends were there to save THEM this time and it was by all accounts surreal.

The property on East Pattagansett road in Niantic does have a small insurance policy that will assist but it is minimal and will only cover a tiny fraction of what will be needed to begin their journey in a new home. The vast majority of all belongings were heavily smoke and water damaged and the contents of both children's rooms a total loss. We were able to save some small kitchen appliances, dishes, kitchen supplies and a few toys.

Please help us give back to this wonderful family who have dedicated their entire lives to helping others in so many of the Southeastern Connecticut communities.

DONATION IMPORTANT NOTES: All funds received will go directly to family without delay. We did note that when a donation of any amount is set up, there is a box next to it that says for example 'AMOUNT TO YOUCARING.COM' and provides a percentage....please please select 0 for this option, this is a free website and should remain as such. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call at 860-949-2025. I'm working with the company today to make it easier and not have folks have to make a selection.

Hi everyone-
Wanted to provide an update as Heather and Lou are working on organizing and assessing the possessions that were saved, or that we THOUGHT were saved from the fire damage. This will be an ongoing list, followed by a website so that those who would like to donate a particular item can check it off the needs list. Please check back often for updates or feel free to friend me on Facebook as I will post there as well.

Preliminary list:
Twin boxspring/frame/bed for 8 year old Ben (we think the mattress is okay but please advise if you have access to one and they will decide from there)
Crib for 2 year old with mattress and furniture as well
Books for both kids, Madi loves so many things the top of the list is all things disney and princess and she seems to loves animals too
Ben is 8 so anything age appropriate, he loves outdoors, action activities, dirtbikes/atv's and sports too

Thanks very much and again and remember to check back often for items needed to the list

Thankful to each and every one of you,
Kelly Cormier

Hi I just wanted to check in and let everyone know that despite it being a jam packed handful of days since the fires, the family is doing okay and are walking through the process that follows such a difficult blow. As friends, we have all learned from this so much already and all each of wishes is for Lou, Heather and the kids is to feel safe, re establish a good home and have the belonging and tools they need to make it through each day with strength.

Your donations have meant so very much to the family and we are already 1/3 of the way to the goal in just a few days. People have phoned with many kindnesses and offers and gift cards and age appropriate toys and books would be appreciated for the children. These can be directed to 4 Highwood Road in Niantic until Heather and Lou find a new forever home. Please continue to share this message and request as the need does not ease with the passing days, it simply becomes more evident.
