On February 28th, my amazing sister Alexandra reached out for help to escape her abuser. She was in a women's shelter in Florida, across the country from our family, and her boyfriend had beaten her so severely that she had three fractured ribs. She had taken two days to contact us because this awful human had taken her phone and keys, and held her captive in the house they shared. The worst part was that this wasn't even the first time. Her boyfriend has been verbally and physically abusing her for months, gradually cutting off her communication with friends and family, forcing her to sever professional ties, and convincing her that she could not do any better. Previously Alexandra needed stitches on her face from one of his vicious attacks, and was forced to lie about the injury to cover for him. Despite everything, Alexandra was one of the few lucky women to escape their abusers alive, and sought help. After she was admitted to the VA hospital for treatment for her most recent injuries, her abuser was arrested and taken to jail. She had a couple of amazing friends who went with her to retrieve her beloved cat, Mono, and the few things she owns, and get her to safety until our father could fly across the country to bring her home to Oregon. Unfortunately her abuser has already convinced someone to post bail for him, and he is out in society, endangering others. Alexandra will have to fly to Florida for their court date on March 14th. He is from a very privileged family, and it may be a struggle to ensure he stays behind bars, and receives the help he needs to no longer be a threat to other vulnerable women. Both of our parents will be flying to Tampa with Alexandra to provide support, and make sure she is safe, as this is an extremely painful, and difficult time for her. We hope that the evidence provided by the Hillsborough Sheriff's department will be sufficient to achieve our objectives, but we are preparing for a fight, nonetheless. The sudden expense of moving Alexandra and Mono across the country, as well as flights and accommodations, lost wages from the job she had to abandon, and the upcoming expenses for her, our parents flights, as well as hotel, car rental, and food expenses is a heavy burden on top of an already difficult situation. We have set up this fund to cover these expenses, and anything extra will be used to help Alexandra fight this legal battle, should the need arise, and get back on her feet to start a new life in Oregon. Alexandra is a USMC veteran, so luckily for the moment she has some medical expenses covered by the VA, but not everything, and appointments can be very difficult to get in some areas of the country right now. Anything you can spare would be a great help to Alexandra right now in putting her life back together. As the immediate need is for flights, if you have flyer miles to donate instead, that would also be immensely helpful, and simply post a comment, or contact Katrina to be put in touch with Alexandra's parents who are coordinating flights. Thank you for your love and support during this battle.
