The Story

In 2006, the entire community of Thomas A. Edison High School was devastated when one student and two recent graduates committed suicide.  We were all hit hard again in December 2006, after an Edison senior was diagnosed with Leukemia, a life-threatening form of cancer.
In response to these events, one member of the school's SGA proposed hosting a walkathon, and the idea quickly gained popularity.  Over the next few months, as the event was planned, it became a school-wide effort.  The planning committee fell under the SGA, but included many other interested students.  The girls lacrosse team members thought of the name: the Got Hope Walkathon.  The Key Club and JROTC hosted games and activities at the event, while the PTSA donated refreshments.
Despite initial weather concerns, the first walkathon was incredibly successful.  Not only students and faculty from the school, but also local community officials, came out to walk.  Over $5,000 was raised as a result of the first walkathon.  Two checks of equal amount were sent to the two organizations selected as our beneficiaries, both representing the issues that had impacted our student body: Crisis Link and Life With Cancer (see Our Beneficiaries
