Yomilka and Leidy, members of the Oasis TEEN program, are both exceptionally bright young ladies. Despite the hardships and obstacles they face growing up in Paterson, New Jersey, they still remain hopeful and optimistic about their futures. Mary Help of Christians Academy, an all-girls secondary school in North Haledon, New Jersey, has offered both Yomilka and Leidy partial scholarships to their institution.
With close to 50,000 residents living below the federal poverty line, Paterson is one of the poorest cities in New Jersey. Last year only 7% of high school students achieved the standard of “college and career ready” after taking the SAT test. With a challenged school system, your donation is crucial now more than ever. Help us raise the remaining $8,500 of tuition costs to ensure Yomilka and Leidy receive the education they deserve and the future they dream of.
“Oasis has surely been a safe haven since the moment we walked in. It has provided us with school supplies at the beginning of each school year, food during the holidays, clothing during the winter, and much more. One of the greatest assets of being in Oasis is the community of people who become your lifeline. After completing High school and College I would like to be a medic in the army and help soldiers who have gotten hurt while fighting to protect the United States of America’s citizens. With the help of Oasis, my teachers, my family, I can become someone else’s lifeline.”
“Oasis has taught me to believe in myself and that where I come from will not determine where I will go. Before arriving at Oasis, I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to attend a prestigious school like Mary Help of Christians Academy. Since Oasis believed in me, I believed in me. For this, I will be forever grateful for my experience at Oasis and to the staff and volunteers that have inspired me to follow my dreams. In the future my goal is to become a Civil Engineer and I will never give up until I reach that dream.”

About our TEEN Program
Realizing the difficulties that Paterson’s teenagers face, Oasis saw a need, and proposed a solution. Thus began the Teen Empowerment and Enrichment Network. The program focuses on academic skills development, college preparation and career planning, and self-esteem. Our teens also participate in regular field trips to museums, tourist attractions, and educational venues.
- Our TEEN Program serves 63 teenagers ages 14-18 four days a week.
- In the 2015-2016 academic year, 100% of the graduating seniors in our TEEN Program were accepted and enrolled in college, compared with just over 37% of Paterson residents ages 18-24 enrolled in college.
