The Story

Envision a young woman and her family who consistently exemplify innumerable qualities that many of us could only hope to embody. That woman is Leah Wightman, and she and her selfless, caring family are in need of our help.

In early March, Leah was admitted and diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. While her cancer is “treatable,” she needs a bone marrow transplant to survive.

This fundraising site has been established to help centralize contributions for Leah and her family from extended family members, friends and the community.

Your donations will help to offset the cost of future financial stressors and necessities and assist with the family affording future procedures to have Leah's bone marrow compared to potential matches on the national bone marrow registry.

Leah faces each day with a positive and fierce determination to get herself closer to remission. Let's show her our community's unwavering support by providing her with the means to do so!

Please use the "Donate Now" link to make your contribution. This page can also be shared through social media (Facebook, Twitter) and through email.

Thank you for your continued prayers and love. And as always, live #WightmanStrong!

A brief note and thank you to all:

This weekend was a huge success! Wonderful turnout for both events. Many thanks to Rudy and Mickie Perini who were the brains and brawn of the "WightmanStrong Takes Flight" fundraiser and Josh Keyes, host of the "WightmanStrong Flag Football, Skills Camp and Community Day" fundraiser. Please check the local papers for more details and coverage!

As of today, Leah's fundraising site will no longer remain active or accepting donations. The support of the Chatham community (and beyond!) rallying behind Leah and her family throughout everything thus far has been overwhelmingly positive. Each of you has exemplified how unconditional love, caring, prayers and support can provide a family with the strength to face each day with a renewed energy and fierce determination to conquer each awaiting challenge. As happy and grateful as I am with the success of Leah's funding page, I'm even more grateful to come from a small town that radiates such love and support for one of our own. My greatest hope is that Leah's strength and story continues to band our community and surrounding communities; inspiring us to be our best and keep moving forward, together.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for your generosity, prayers and unwavering support. Continue to live and be #WightmanStrong!

A "Chatham Celebrates Leah" Weekend!

Leah underwent her transplant on June 14th. According to the family, the actual transplant only took a total of 16-minutes. Since then, Leah has been fighting hard to recover.

This weekend, Chatham is showing our unwavering support with two different fundraising events!

Rudy Perini, local pilot and resident of Ghent, NY, will be hosting a fundraiser in support of Leah today, Saturday, June 25th at Kline Kill Airport located off of Route 21B in Ghent, NY. Flights will be scheduled from 9:00a.m. - 1:00p.m. and again from 2:00p.m.-5:00p.m. Adults $25/each and Children $20/each for a 15-minute airplane ride over Chatham. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to Leah to support her and her family.

Josh Keyes, Chatham graduate and current NFL player, is returning to Chatham this weekend and will be hosting an event at the Chatham High School on Sunday, June 26th, for a "Flag Football, Skills Camp & Community Day" in support of Leah. The event will also include food, music, bounce house for kids, NFL autographed items for auction, and event t-shirts for anyone that participates in the youth camp or flag football tournament. All proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to Leah as well.

Hopefully many of you will take part in these unique fundraisers! If you'd like to email me a picture to add to this site, please do! Email: katherineabehrens@gmail.com
