My name is Lauren Okafor and I will be matriculating at The Frank H. Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University in the fall of 2017.
My Vision: Our health is the focal point of our existence and progression through life, because it drastically transforms our circumstances and abilities when it becomes substandard. My vision of becoming a doctor was shaped by my experiences of visiting, shadowing, and working for physicians throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers. Although inevitably unable to prevent every illness or injury, they were all committed to presenting patients with care that lead to the fastest route of recovery. Utilizing their medical expertise and clinical training in treatment, they provided needed support and a long-lasting relationship for each and every one patients. The standard methods of practice were fairly similar, and the clinical applications to my biomedical science curriculum were undeniably intriguing. These experiences led me to pursue a pre-medicine curriculum, while competing in Division I basketball at James Madison University, as well as an advanced biomedical sciences graduate program and Georgetown and George Mason Universities. I became more focused on pursuing medical school and the possibility of being able to effectively minimize negative health statistics and disparities through my career.
My Impact: My decision to create this account also stems from my knowledge of the essential need for more physicians who look like me, practicing in our present day healthcare system. Two-thirds of Black applicants for medical school are black women. However, an extremely small percentage of African-American women are accepted and able to pursue their dreams. As a physician, I hope to use my platform to eliminate health disparities while elevating young women of color to break through the socioeconomic barriers that often limit our opportunity to excel in this field. I am blessed to be a part of the "small percentage" and with your help, I will be able to pursue my passion.
You Caring: As I write this open letter to you all, my projected tuition and fees for four years of medical school at Netter, will well be over $324,000. I am asking for any donation that you can make to assist me with my financial barrier, as I hope to do the same for aspiring physicians and healthcare professionals in the future. I look forward to and am thankful for your much needed support.
