A year ago today this fundraiser was sent out as Lauren entered a radical surgery to fight her battle. Sadly, Lauren lost that battle on January 18th. By her side was her ever present support, cheerleader, and true love Matthew Waters.
As Matt, Sherry, Carroll, Ronnie, Brenda, Derrick and the Waters family mourn this terrible loss - the outstanding bills for the last 30 days in the hospital and Lauren's final care at home remain enormous. The money raised so far (40+k thanks to you) has been spent over the years on the multiple hospital stays and treatments. Tens of thousands of dollars in bills remain - and there are also funeral costs that Matt is facing.
Please consider supporting our dear Matt who is mourning his angel, his partner in crime, the love of his life.
Thank you & prayers for all of you feeling this loss.
UPDATE: Lauren is in the hospital. The chemo took it's toll on her body and she got illeus which is dilation of the intestines. They seemed to have gotten that under control in terms of the pain but the tube down her throat was really awful for a few days. She had a blood transfusion yesterday and in general is feeling pretty weak. Matt had to work the last couple of days because of stacks and stacks of medical bills, which is why we are asking again for some financial support. It's really hard on the two of them when Matt isn't able to be with her and the doctors try to relay new information. She is spending all of her time focusing on listening to her body and resting. Lauren's mama and stepdad Ronnie are here which is a great help. Please consider donating or sharing! Much love and prayers for our wonderful Lauren and Matt.
UPDATE: We need help! Tomorrow (Friday 9/16) Lauren begins three days of a much more intense chemotherapy. Doctors will monitor her in the hospital to see how her body reacts. As many of you know, Lauren has been mostly in the hospital over the last 5 weeks with doctors working to decide whether to operate or start chemotherapy. She has been trying to manage debilitating pain from a blockage in her bowel as well as the inability to eat anything for months. The cancer is present in her liver and poor Lauren spends most of her time in the bathroom in terrible pain. She is on hourly pain medication that doctors are having trouble keeping under control. The costs are skyrocketing as Lauren and Matt fight this disease. There is talk of further surgery down the road and very difficult decisions to be made. Please consider sharing this and donating. Lauren continues to focus on healing while Matt is now in a position to work during the day and sleep on a mat in the hospital at night. They are both exhausted and drained. Please do what you can to help ease their stress financially, along with continuing to pray. Lauren's mother is in town and helping out as is her loving brother Derrick.
Lauren keeps fighting this aggressive stage 4 cancer with grace, deep faith, and of course - perfect makeup. She has lost 30lbs and is below 100lbs as her body can't seem to hold on to food and nutrients. Her diet is very restricted and her body's response is unpredictable which has been psychologically and physically challenging. In addition, she continues to be under doctors care as she deals with the side effects of menopause caused by the hysterectomy.
Here's the deal - our girl is a FIGHTER and she is up for the battle - with Matt right by her side. The surgical bills have piled up. Unfortunately, some treatments are not covered by insurance so we are looking to raise $55,000 more to give them the options to do whatever will rid her body of this cancer!
As you can expect, there is a lot of financial stress around this whole process. Without future treatment Lauren and Matt already have tens of thousands of dollars of debt, even with insurance. You can see the exhaustion in their faces but they remain optimisic. Please consider helping these wonderful people so they can focus on Lauren's healing!
While trying to get pregnant, Lauren was diagnosed with stage 4 Colon cancer which she is actively battling with strength and deep faith.
At the young age of 37, Lauren had to begin fighting for her life, supported every step of the way by her loving champion and primary caregiver, her husband Matt. This brave woman is a loving wife, daughter, sister, friend and proud Georgia Bulldog (GO DAWGS!), determined to win this battle and start a family.
We all know the massive costs of health care. This page was set up to help support Matt and Lauren financially as she endures a second round of aggressive chemo and prepares for a third major surgery. Matt is a successful freelance 1st AD, this presents a challenge as he is the only source of income and Lauren’s primary caregiver. He is needed while she gets her treatment and spends weeks hospitalized recovering from surgeries. We are asking you to please open up your hearts and wallets to ease some of the stress as this beautiful couple battles an insidious disease.
Lauren and Matt are best friends, madly in love and crack each other up. Until May 2014, they described their life as “perfect". After 8 years together, they decided they were ready to start a family. While having trouble conceiving, Lauren began to experience stomach pains so severe, she twice ended up in the ER. As she is young and has no family history of cancer, she was misdiagnosed several times.
On May 5, 2014 doctors told Lauren and Matt she required emergency surgery to remove a large mass blocking her colon. The following morning she had the mass removed along with one ovary and a partial colectomy. Lauren and Matt then received the devastating news that the biopsy of the tumor revealed Stage 4 colon cancer.
After months of chemotherapy Lauren underwent a second surgery to remove parts of her uterus and stomach, perform another partial colectomy, and have a highly aggressive HI-PEC procedure which flooded her open cavity and the organs in her abdomen with hot chemotherapy drugs, burning her insides to hopefully help kill the cancer.
Last summer, a follow-up scan showed the cancer had metastasized to Lauren’s other ovary. She spent the Fall on another round of aggressive chemo and scheduled another #160 HI-PEC procedure for January 2016. Very few patients are given this surgery more than once and we now know why. The surgery was horrendously painful. It took 5 days to get the agonizing pain under control even with multiple epidurals. This surgery removed her second ovary and scanned for other hot spots. To this day Lauren's pain and discomfort continue. At the age of 38, Lauren is going through menopause on hormone replacement therapy while she focuses on dealing with the new spots that appeared on her liver in June 2016.
A MESSAGE FROM LAUREN AND MATT:
We continue to be positive and so do our doctors. We believe in miracles and know that God is good. We take it one day at a time and are looking forward to adopting a child in the near future.
Please help our friends, the remarkable Lauren and Matt Waters.
