The Story

Save Latin Village/Ward’s Corner - Protect Latin American Community, Culture and Heritage!

London’s oldest Latin American community market is under threat of social cleansing. We urgently need your support to fund our legal defence!

Latin Village / Ward’s Corner in Seven Sisters has been home to 60 market stalls since the 1990s and is a fixture in London's Latin American community - the capital’s second fastest-growing ethnic population. When property firms decide that traditional markets can be moved in the name of development, estates and homes are never far behind, so the fight for the market is also the fight for the wider community’s soul.

After Haringey Council accepted a planning application by Grainger PLC in 2008, it was rejected on appeal by a High Court judge, who ruled in June 2010 that the Council’s decision had not taken into account the impact that the development would have on local culture and heritage which would disproportionately affect ethnic minority groups. In May 2012, Haringey once again gave Grainger the go-ahead to turn the market into a shopping mall and private flats, without any affordable housing provision and only lip service paid to the concerns raised by the appeals judge two years earlier.

On 22 September 2016, Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) were issued against the Latin Village/Ward’s Corner traders local homeowners, giving the Council go-ahead to start an eviction process against the market. We are doing everything in our power to protect this London landmark, but urgently need funds to pay for legal support and representation by January 2017. We will need £7000 to get advice and open our case with a barrister. This is the first step to challenge the CPOs from a human rights perspective, and stop this unwanted and unnecessary development. Additional funding will be required for the second step to get representation at the public hearing in March/April 2017.

Thank you everyone for helping us legally challenge the CPO. It was hugely successful thanks to all your donations that delivered a great legal team. It was a lesson in an inequality in arms, but we had the community behind us, so our cause was more genuine. Also, the United Nations publicly intervened http://ow.ly/Bguh30e74Cejust in time before the hearing finished. We still have outstanding legal fees to pay so we have to continue fundraising. Our team managed to raise £1,784 at Carnaval del Pueblo on 6/8/17. Also, the market operator Jonathan Owen/MAMis currently threatening to price 32% of the traders out of the market with extortionate marked up utility hikes before the CPO verdict is delivered in a couple of months. And he has a conflict of interest, as he was appointed by the developer. So the battle continues.....

3 WEEKS TO GO TILL CPO PUBLIC HEARING

The first week of the hearing, July 11-14, will be dedicated to hearing the council's case. From July 17-26 our case will be heard and we need your support to ensure that we have the representation we need!

The money raised so far has covered most of the legal fees associated with building and writing up the case for the Market - however we are still short and more will be needed to cover the costs of representation.

Costs incurred so far have reached £18,000. Thanks to the crowdfunder and fundraising events we have raised a total of £13,000. We have been and continue to work on other sources of funding to cover these final and crucial costs - but nothing is certain yet and any donation here helps to keep this fight going as we reach its final phase!

To give a sense of some of the work that has been done to prepare the case, here is a link to our statement of case: https://wardscorner.wikispaces.com/file/view/Statement%20of%20Case%20FINAL%20-%20Market%20Traders.pdf/612101295/Statement%20of%20Case%20FINAL%20-%20Market%20Traders.pdf"
