The Story

Save Latin Village/Ward’s Corner - Protect Latin American Community, Culture and Heritage!

London’s oldest Latin American community market is under threat of social cleansing. We urgently need your support to fund our legal defence!

Latin Village / Ward’s Corner in Seven Sisters has been home to 60 market stalls since the 1990s and is a fixture in London's Latin American community - the capital’s second fastest-growing ethnic population. When property firms decide that traditional markets can be moved in the name of development, estates and homes are never far behind, so the fight for the market is also the fight for the wider community’s soul.

After Haringey Council accepted a planning application by Grainger PLC in 2008, it was rejected on appeal by a High Court judge, who ruled in June 2010 that the Council’s decision had not taken into account the impact that the development would have on local culture and heritage which would disproportionately affect ethnic minority groups. In May 2012, Haringey once again gave Grainger the go-ahead to turn the market into a shopping mall and private flats, without any affordable housing provision and only lip service paid to the concerns raised by the appeals judge two years earlier.

On 22 September 2016, Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) were issued against the Latin Village/Ward’s Corner traders local homeowners, giving the Council go-ahead to start an eviction process against the market. We are doing everything in our power to protect this London landmark, but urgently need funds to pay for legal support and representation by January 2017. We will need £7000 to get advice and open our case with a barrister. This is the first step to challenge the CPOs from a human rights perspective, and stop this unwanted and unnecessary development. Additional funding will be required for the second step to get representation at the public hearing in March/April 2017.

Thanks to all your kind donations we have been able to complete STEP 1 of our legal journey. We have had a very long group meeting in Chambers with our newly appointed Barrister at the beginning of this month; and registered charity Latin Elephant was present in the meeting, to witness our campaign for the Latin community and Wards Corner. Our Barrister has visited our community this week and is now advising our case. Our next STEP 2 is fighting the case in the public hearing. The date is estimated for March/April 2017. Para adelante! Que viva el Pueblo Latino en UK!
