The Story

LysantibacteLess than a year ago, at only 19 years old, my nephew, Ky'are Grant and his family received devastating news. Doctors diagnosed him with a rare stage 4 kidney disease called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, or FSGS, that attacks the kidney's filtering unit, causing serious scarring, permanent kidney damage and even failure. We all were shocked in hearing the news and the impact the diagnosis has had on the family has been nothing short of tremendous.

The first major change was in finding the right foods and modifying his dietary needs to sustain his life.  This was an everyday struggle because there was so much that he could not eat.  The simple foods we take for granted everyday could have cost him his life and the family agreed to also change the foods they ate so that Ky'are would feel supported along this new journey.  But three short months later, still fighting for his health and believing for the best outcome, even this wasn't enough to keep him from having to be placed on a 3x/week dialysis regimen.  It helped...but not enough... his kidney function still diminished and even with the most hopeful option of home dialysis, those efforts failed, landing Ky'are in the hospital in a critical state.

We prayed and remained encouraged but the burden of concern for his life and financial obligation continued to mount.  Yes, we are on the national donor list but the soonest they could give hope for a kidney donor was THREE YEARS YET!  So then we sought out living donors to help as the next best option, and asked volunteers to be tested.  Just before Christmas we received yet more news from the doctors that changed everything.  As it turns out, Curtisha, Ky'are's mom, was the match he needed for a donor!

That being said, this February 2018 Curtisha Grant will donate her kidney to her son Ky'are and give him another chance at life!  But this is where we need your help!!!

With both MOTHER & SON going through this medical procedure, we have to come together as a community and help this family heal.  The medical costs and burden of medication and care needed for the family over the next several months is insurmountable.  With the rising costs, and overall budget and labor cuts associated with the medical care industry and the 6 month recovery time they need, insurance does not cover it all.

Any amount that is placed on your heart to donate will help support two lives.  The Grant family is known for their generous contributions and unconditional show of love toward others.  Husband, and USMC military veteran Frank Grant served our country for 20 plus years, putting his life on the line for others; Curtisha has served on the home-front and is a Yellow Rose of TX in addition to being a former Military Spouse of the Year.  Giving to others is what they do! ... and now its time for us to do the same for them.

Will you join me?  We thank you in advance for your generosity.

God bless,

Dr. Letisha D. Hines

Our Coast to Coast Kidney-thon Fundraiser was a huge SUCCESS. The May 6, 2018 event was hosted on  Facebook Live from 10am - 10pm CST. Our Objectives were to bring awareness to Kidney Disease, encourage living organ donation, provide  healthy cooking options and provoke healthy lifestyle changes, Provide medical expert information from a Nephrologist and Dialysis nurse,  encourage prayer in families and to raise a 10K towards Key's road to  recovery medication cost.  We raised 4k during those 12 hours and payments are still coming in. We are very hopeful that we will reach our goal. We want to be examples that "Miracles still Happen"!
