The Story

After 7 years (and 4 separate home studies), how could we be joyfully unprepared for the arrival of a brand new Day? And yet we are.

We weren't waiting. Our latest home study was in limbo, paperwork out of date. Kevin was trying to remedy that over the summer while school is out, and when he spoke to the new agency that will be working on our latest home study, he mentioned that our journey began in 2010 with Ethiopia.

"So you are open to a child of a different ethnicity than yourselves?" (We are white.)

Yes, he said, of course we are.

"We have a special case you might be interested in. There's a birth mother in Missouri whose baby is due August 7."

And suddenly we find ourselves here: frantically completing weeks' worth of paperwork in days, praying the baby doesn't arrive early, and hoping beyond hope that we can fundraise the fees that will be due when the baby is born.

We were given an extremely generous gift when we were in Florida that has covered all 7 years of applications and fees so far, and will cover a large portion of this actual adoption. We are scrounging and saving every cent we can to reach this goal. And we are humbly and openheartedly asking for your help in filling in the missing pieces.

With that in mind, we are selling puzzle pieces! For a mere $15, we will write your name on the back of one of these pieces, and when the puzzle is complete, we will frame it between two pieces of glass and hang it in the nursery so our child will know from the very beginning how you all buoyed us up and made our family possible.

Meet Elijah Barack Zy'Air Day, born August 7, 2017, 7lbs 4oz and 19.25" long. We are over the moon, and overwhelmed, and exhausted, and in love. Thank you, thank you, thank you, friends. You are a gift and a light to us.

Y'all. We remain overwhelmed by everyone's kindness, interest, love, and support! Paperwork (for now) is complete, home study complete, we've been setting up the nursery with the help of many generous and patient-with-assembling folks, we have been video-chatting with the expectant mother - we get to talk to her again tomorrow...which is the day before her C-section on August 7! We are excited and nervous, as things are by no means set in stone and could fall through if she changes her mind or something goes wrong legally. We are working to prepare ourselves for all outcomes but remain hopeful.

If all goes according to plan, we will fly into MO on Wednesday, and should receive temporary custody of the baby that night or the next morning - whenever the birth mother is discharged from the hospital. We have to stay in Jefferson City until we go to court - could be a day or several - and if al goes well with the judge, we can leave the city but not the state. We'll have 5-10 more aye in MO waiting for ICPC - the interstate compact that allows us to take the child across state lines. Once that comes through, we'll fly back to CA. Again, if all goes smoothly, the adoption will be official and final 6-ish months later.

Thank you all again for being in our lives in ways large and small - we are so grateful!

Beloved friends and family, we remained overwhelmed by your generosity. We spent the past 10 days in a whirlwind of straddling two worlds: co-preaching a HUGE youth conference and our ongoing adoption (finding a notary at a conference center was not as hard as we thought). We are heading into the second conference, and are exhausted from the long days and the mental energy of being here when all we want to focus on is preparing our home and hearts for the Brand New Day!

We have been able to skype with the birth mother once here, and she is more than ready to have the baby. The c-section is scheduled for August 7, and we hope and pray baby doesn't show up early. 😬

We have a home study visit scheduled for next Monday, right after we arrive back in CA, and then full steam ahead on baby-proofing and nursery decorating!

We won't know details about making travel plans or any plans once we get into Missouri - we know we will stay inn Jefferson City until we receive permission from a judge to leave the city (after we visit a pediatrician, etc.) then we have to stay in state for a few days or week until we get a court date to receive permission to travel across state lines. Then we come home to California!

We are still astounded by your generosity. Truly, we have never experienced anything like it.

We love you all,

Kevin & Katie
