The Story

Most aspirants to religious life have to grapple with the weight of student debt as an obstacle to beginning to live their call. My story is a little different. I have the same obstacle, not with debt, but with my health.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 8 - an insulin-dependent chronic condition. Many people believe that insulin is a cure, but it is not. As a result, besides closely monitoring my diet, I must test my blood sugar levels daily and must be hooked up to a pump to receive insulin constantly. I also have a group of doctors that I must meet with regularly. As you can imagine, diabetes is quite financially demanding; doctors visits, the cost of insulin, pump supplies, testing supplies and glucose monitors quickly add up.

Suffering with this disease has given me an opportunity to share in the sufferings of Christ and to unite myself to Him in a unique way. But now this cross must be embraced and experienced in a new way, as I found out that I will have a two-year gap in health insurance coverage after I turn 26 and in my first two years in the convent.  The Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa (MSSR sisters) cannot cover the costs associated with managing my diabetes until I qualify for their healthcare plan in the summer of 2020. The total amount I must fundraise to cover the gap is $30,000.

I ask that you may prayerfully consider joining me in this effort, that I may be able to join the convent and pursue a life consecrated to Christ.

Dear friends in Christ,

My name is Fr. Brent Maher. I had the joy of serving as Katie's spiritual director and have been entrusted by her to keep up with this page for a time to provide updates on her journey in religious life. On account of your generosity Katie met her goal and on August 5 she and Rose-Janae, her classmate, knocked on the door of the convent and were received as Aspirants of the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa. This past Tuesday, SISTER Katie and Sister Rose-Janae were received as Postulants of the Marian Sisters. This means that they have received a postulant's habit and will live the life of the Sisters to learn more deeply what it means to be a religious sister. If at the end of this period of postulancy she discerns that she is called to remain there longer, she will be received as a novice and given a new habit and a new name. I encourage you to follow the blog run by the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa. It shows a handful of pictures of Sr. Katie and includes helpful reflections and explanations on the life that she is now living. It can be found at I thank you all for your generosity shown in donations, words of support, and prayers. I can assure you that she is praying for you daily in her new home and ask your continued prayers for. May the Good Lord bless you for your kindness.

in the Heart of Jesus, through Mary,
Fr. Brent

It's been about two months since I first shared the news about my decision to answer the Lord’s call to grow in a more intimate relationship with He who is the Love of my soul and move forward in the vocational call to be a religious sister with the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa.

My acceptance, however, was contingent upon one thing: raising the funds necessary to cover Type 1 Diabetes medical costs for the first three years. If, by the beginning of June, a good portion of goal was raised, showing God’s favor and desire of my vocation, I would be officially accepted and allowed to enter in August.

God must like a good challenge because $30,000 seemed like quite a lot to me. But quickly I learned I should have no doubts, because He would provide for me abundantly through YOU - His beloved people.

Never would I have imagined that in two months the goal would be nearly met, with less than $4,000 more to go!

I have no other words but THANK YOU! Thank you for responding to God’s call to charity. Thank you to everyone who has shared in this fundraising effort, but more importantly shared in this joyful occasion. Thank you even more for your prayers and support.

Because of each and every one of you, I have received my official acceptance letter and am set to enter the convent on August 5. I am overjoyed in knowing that I am one step closer to becoming a spouse of our Lord and laying down my life to serve Him and His Church.

"I have found He whom my soul loves." - Song of Solomon 3:4

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I am overwhelmed by your incredible support. It has been less than a week and together you have helped raise more than $6,000! God is truly abundant in His blessings, graces and love.

I want to thank each one of you who has given thus far. Know that I will hold you close to my heart in prayer as I grow closer to beginning this beautiful new journey with my Beloved.

Though 20% is a great start, there is still more to be raised. I humbly ask you to share this fundraiser with others you may know who would love to support a woman seeking to answer the call of the Lord.

May God bless you during this Holy Week!
