Please help us to fund a conference for mothers who were incarcerated for being pregnant and suffered ostracization and even the forced adoption of their own child.
I found the strength to speak out, and so have other mothers in Irish First Mothers - a peer support and reform activism group which I founded in early 2014. Meeting other mothers through the group has helped us find freedom from the weight of secrets kept for decades. ( Read My Story Here: http://bit.ly/KathyMcMahonJournalArticle )
But countless more traumatized women still silently suffer PTSD, depression and ill health and unexpressed grief. Through the conference we aim to encourage more women to speak about their experiences and lose the sense of shame instilled by a repressed society where women pregnant outside marriage were scorned. By empowering us women to realise our self worth and come together, we can discuss issues and plan activities to ensure no woman is left behind.
Mothers have been not been offered even basic support to help them to help each other. We are being victimized a second time over, because with courage the truth is coming out now, yet as memories are stirred up it's a painful time for the mothers themselves. They need support. We need support. to carry this mission forward. We are now over 50 women in the First Mothers group who had our babies forcibly taken, but resources are exhausted from battling this far.
We need to scale up to build healing outreach so that we can help each other all walk down the path of healing together. We need to build our activism so we can demand and get the justice and truth we deserve. We are frugal and effective, so your aid will go a long way. We need whatever help you can offer. Thank you.
We are Irish First Mothers.
Never again to be silenced.
We are their worst nightmare.
Proud to have survived.
