The Story

Dear Donors,

Our EDT 350 Course: The Foundations of Literacy Through Literature, has teamed up with the organization Conscious Connect to provide books for students in our community. The focus of this project is to provide African American literature to areas where books are not readily available for students.

The client for this project is Conscious Connect, who helps fight illiteracy in the Dayton area and across the country. Their purpose is to end “book deserts,” or scarcity of books in urban areas by providing schools, barber shops and local communities diverse books. Our focus is to provide books specifically on African American literature that reflect the interests and needs of the students who will be reading them.  As socially active future teachers, we realize the importance of the mission of Conscious Connect. That is why we compiled a list of black literature from a variety of genres and for a variety of age groups. We have selected a collection of books that highlight African American culture, image, and everyday life in order to empower African American readers. The genres included in the list are realistic fiction, historical fiction, informational text, poetry, and fantasy. The list includes a total of 40 books, so our goal is to raise $500.

We hope that these books will inspire the children that read them to educate themselves and do great things. Any donation will be helpful in working towards ending book deserts and providing black literature to students who are in need.

Thank you in advance!

Maggie, Lindsey, Megan, and Nicolette
