The Story

Justin Thorn is the 17 year old son of my co-worker and good friend, Lisa Thorn.  Lisa & I have taught various history courses together at Ankeny for about 10 years.  Unfortunately, on the night of July 4th, Justin injured his neck in an accident at a friend’s swimming pool.  He was transported to Mercy Hospital and underwent two neck surgeries to stabilize his neck.  He has regained movement in his arms and is working with OT & PT on using his hands.  It is unknown at this time what the long term impact will be on Justin, but we do know he is facing a long recovery that will include rehab at the Craig Institute in Denver.  Justin is also supported in this journey by his dad, Jason and his younger brother, Braeden(age 13) as well as many other friends and loved ones.  This donation page is to help his family with expenses related to this accident that are not covered by insurance.  We want to make sure that his family can focus on Justin & his well-being rather than worry about expenses.  Thank you in advance for any donation to Justin’s family to help them in this difficult time.
-Jessica Dagel (teacher with Lisa Thorn at Ankeny Centennial High School)

His family has also started a Caring Bridge Page under Justin’s name if you would like to be updated on his progress: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/justinthorn

Justin has been busy at the Craig institute in Denver doing a variety of classes and therapies.  Here is a quick summary taken from their CaringBridge Posts:
In physical therapy, Justin has learned to roll himself over using his arms.  In Power-up weight training, Justin has been lifting weights to strengthen his arms.  Therapeutic Recreation had Justin learn to shoot an adapted paint ball gun & Assistive Technology is working with him on cell phone mounts, computer access, and video gaming.  Finally, Justin has started FES or Functional Electrical Stimulation Bike which uses electrical stimulation to move his legs to pedal a bike.  On top of this, Justin has been battling Mono and not feeling the best due to that!  For more detailed information about each of these things, please check out their Caring Bridge site: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/justinthorn/journal
