Please help support Haku's cancer surgery
Many of you know Haku, but some of you might not. Haku is ten years old. He's had epilepsy for about seven years, is missing a kidney, and has had six surgeries - five to repair his hind legs. (The surgeries had to be redone, due to his hypersensitivities to various materials and sutures etc.) His epilepsy has always been difficult to control, and he is on every anti-seizure medication available to dogs. The cost of his meds is about $400 a month.
Interestingly, when Haku needed to have a kidney removed (cryptorchid surgery gone wrong,) the surgeons discovered other, random parts inside of him - AND, he had the hormone levels of a pregnant female dog.
Haku is so special. He is gentle, naughty, full of love but also full of attitude, and, mostly, he is so adored by his family.
And now, this beautiful puppy has cancer. UPDATE: The cancer was in his small intestine. It is a slow-moving kind, and did not metastasize! That is great news.
I have never given up on Haku and I can't now.
So I am asking for help. A few months after Haku's epilepsy diagnosis, my father passed away suddenly. He left a $50K life insurance policy. Every cent of it went to medical bills for both of my dogs over the past six years. (My other dog, Sano, is also extremely medically compromised.) I have had people tell me to just euthanize both dogs. That mindset is beyond me. They are family.
We are in so much debt from veterinary bills, it's going to be years before we're out of it.
The cost of Haku's initial diagnosis was just over $200. An ultrasound to discern the size and location of the mass was $997. Because of the high-risk nature of this particular surgery, and because Haku is a high-risk patient under anesthesia, it's only possible to do this at an emergency clinic with an overnight staff. The surgery is going to be about $5000. (Update: Estimate was $8000.)
Haku has an awesome team of vets who know him well, and are very fond of his quirky self. I believe his vets are the best on the island. They will absolutely do their best for him.
Anything at all that you can give will be so appreciated. Thank you so much for reading Haku's story.
