The Story

On Wednesday, December 7, 2016,  Scott Blom and two of his teenage children, Kaitlyn (14) and Zach (13), were passengers on a single-engine Piper Cherokee that left their home of Port Alsworth, AK.  They were bound for Anchorage to cheer on the Tanalian Lynx volleyball team at the Alaska State Championship.  When the plane did not arrive on time, search parties were deployed and eventually recovered aircraft debris and personal effects from Lake Clark.

Scott, Kaitlyn, and Zach are survived by their wife and mother, Julie, and two older brothers, Josh (19) and Sam (17).

Our goal with this fund is to relieve Julie from any burden of college costs for Josh and Sam. Though Josh and Sam will have scholarship opportunities and have saved some money for college themselves, we want to come alongside them and help them finish well with no debt. Our goal is to have $40,000 raised for each son, giving them the flexibility to continue their education. Would you be a part of making their new story a little easier? Thanks for your part in blessing Julie and sons, and honoring the life of Scott, Kaitlyn and Zach.

We made our stretched goal this afternoon.  In just over a week, 159 supporters raised over $50,000--that's an average of $315 per supporter!  How amazing is that?!  I am seriously in awe of the way that God is providing for the Blom family through all of your generous giving.

People have been contacting me this evening and asking if they can still give, since we made our goal.  The answer is YES!  To make that clearly indicated on this site, we increased our goal to $80,000.  The average cost of tuition at University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is over $25,000 per year.  Both Josh and Sam are incredibly wise and are striving to graduate with minimal debt.  This current goal would almost cover room and board at UAA.  To cover the average costs of UAA alone would be over $200,000 for both of them (UAA Cost of Attendance).  This drive has been huge in off-setting some of these costs.  Please continue to spread the word.

Also, if you are so inclined, the Blom Memorial websitehas further details for giving to two charities that Kaitlyn and Zach were passionate about.

Thank you again.  Truly humbled.

P.S.
Just today, I read an article on the Rabbit Room about grief and advent and how the two are intertwined. The article was a needed balm to me this week.  Maybe you are ready to receive these words today...maybe read them and store them for later.  I know last week, I could not have received Wendell Berry's words, "We live the given life, and not the planned."  But today, I thought about all that is given.  And I thought about this campaign, and the given life for Josh and Sam Blom is a little better because of the way you have given.

“No fig, no fruit, no olive, no food, no flock, no herd. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord.” Habakkuk 3:17-18.

The response in giving to Josh & Sam Blom's education fund has been overwhelming.  Thank you so much for your generosity.  Based on donors' feedback, we've been asked to increase the amount of the fund.  We have now made our goal $25,000 for each son, for a total of $50,000.

Thank you again for your generosity.  It is truly astounding.

The outpouring of love and support has been so inspiring.  Thank you for your generous giving.  We have created the beginnings of a website where you can learn more about the Blom family and their heart of the Gospel and for the people of Alaska.  There is a place there to share a story or memory of them, and see the other causes that they were so passionate about.  Please continue to share with your friends.
