My name is Jonathan Almgren and five years ago I embarked on an adventure and moved from Portland Oregon to the Philippines. After living in Manila for a few years I met a wonderful woman and we now have a life together with a beautiful son named Jack (see our pictures in the photo gallery). This past year we discovered that our family would be growing and that we were going to have another baby! We were both were thrilled with news of a second child. The pregnancy progressed with normalcy and Roselle carried the baby to term. When the baby was born we were excited, but this emotion quickly changed as the doctors said there were problems with the baby and they were concerned. A few days passed and sadly our precious newborn had died. We were devastated with this news.
As a result this past year has been a challenge for us. In addition to losing our baby, for the last 3 years I've been suffering from two herniated disks in my back with severe sciatic pain in my legs. The last 3 months my condition has worsened to the point that I am unable to work, spending as much as 23 hours a day in bed. It is difficult for me to get around in the house unassisted and has affected my ability to care for my wife and young son.
In my recent visit to the medical center, the doctors are saying that I urgently need back surgery as soon as possible. The disks in my back that are causing the issues are L4-L5 and L5-S (please refer to the doctors notes in the picture gallery of this fundraiser). In the Philippines, most hospitals are requiring a down payment up front first before they will do any surgeries. The total cost for the surgery will be $10,000. I can have the surgery scheduled and done with a $600 down payment, however the hospital would like the full cost soon after the surgery. In addition, I will have a long recovery period before I can return to work and would like to pay for the full amount as soon as possible. Thus not creating more of a family burden while I recover.
I am in a situation where I have limited healthcare benefits and must pay out of pocket for all treatments. Due to our very limited income and having no insurance I am unable to pay for this surgery myself. As a result I am setting up this fundraiser with the hope that we can raise enough money to have the surgery and I can get healthy and move forward for Roselle and my son Jack.
Please consider praying for us as we move forward with all the details with our family and this surgery.
Second please consider helping me get back on my feet with the cost of this surgery. No amount is too small and every gift will contribute to our $10,000 goal. Our first step is to secure $600 for the deposit so that we can schedule the surgery and than move towards the remaining goal to pay the balance for the surgery.
If anyone has any other recommendations or suggestion for getting help, please let us know.
We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to read this and for any help you may offer our family.
