I am a 40 year old husband and father of four (living). I have a genetic disorder called Marfan syndrome, which among other things causes aneurysms. I spent 3 months in the hospital 4 years ago after my last aortic repair. I still have an abdominal aneurysm and am trying to keep it stable until my next surgery, which is likely to leave me paralyzed. Our eldest daughter has the same disorder.
My wife was just unexpectedly laid off from her job, and I am on disability. We had been making just enough to get by. Now, we're trying to navigate all the different "assistance" and programs that take a certain amount of time to get approved/start actually paying and/or require you to have no resources. In 2008, we bought a 2000 Chevy Express 3500, modified, for cash. It was previously a government vehicle, then a cab. We've only had to pay for maintenance, but even that has been difficult. At over 260K miles, and the van or lift unpredictably malfunctioning, we need to get a much newer vehicle that will last us 10 or more years. A fully modified van that would fit all of us would cost close to $50,000, but for about $30,000, we could purchase a slightly used van and have a lift installed. Please help!
