Joe Bride has worked for the City of Del Mar's Public Works Dept for 6+ years as the Deputy Director (now Acting Director with Eric's recent departure). Recently, doctors found cancer that required immediate amputation of Joe's left leg, just above the knee. Joe needs a prosthetic leg, and insurance will cover some, but not all of those costs. So we are crowdfunding for the expenses not covered by insurance.
Joe's job is physically demanding - he is often out in the field, inspecting pipes, pump stations and reservoirs, evaluating problems, overseeing construction projects, and much more - so he needs a state-of-the-art prosthetic leg with microprocessors to give him the best possible functionality. Joe also works closely with Del Mar's Parks and Recreation Committee and Traffic and Parking Committee. Those of us who have worked with Joe know him to be extremely dedicated to Del Mar and the Public Works mission. Indeed, his goal is to complete his career with Del Mar.
Joe's insurance will cover some but not all of the costs associated with his prosthetic leg. We anticipate his out-of-pocket costs will be a minimum of $25,000 -- possibly a lot more, depending on what insurance will cover. So we've set $25,000 as our goal, and will increase the goal if required, once Joe knows what the insurance company will pay. Joe and his wife, Christine, have been married for 24 years and have two daughters (one in high school, one in college).
We're impressed with Joe's positive attitude about moving forward with his goals and continuing to serve the City of Del Mar at the same high level of service he has already demonstrated, despite this setback. We hope you'll join us in making sure that Joe gets the prosthetic leg he needs to do that.
