The Story

Greetings Beautiful Community,

Our goal is to raise $15,000 by the end of September in support of Chuy, Donaji and their family (more info below). You can make your donation at the link below or in cash at the upcoming fundraising dinner in San Franciscoon Friday 9/22.

Please donate here: https://www.youcaring.com/jesuslona-756912

Many of you know Donaji and her family. You’ve heard about her son Chuy’s struggle with cancer over the last 15 years. One month after celebrating remission, on January 29th, Chuy was diagnosed with a new more aggressive form of cancer.

This past February, as supporters and allies of Chuy and his courageous family, were able to raise over $25,000 in only 7 days.  Your response was swift and enormous, proving the strength and generosity of our community.   At the time, we never imagined that Chuy would still be with us now, over 7 months later.  It is not what the doctors or anyone ever predicted.

Chuy has taught us to let go of predictions and instead take things moment by moment.  As he continues to swing between suffering and discomfort and his drawings, love of music and incredible sense of humor, we have learned over and over again to follow his lead as opposed to any medical standards or other attempts to define his journey, which is uniquely Chuy's and always has been.

At this time, we want you to know that your funds have been used; to pay for medical expenses, alternative healing, and a bucket list of joy.   It has also supported food, housing and transportation for a family of 4.  This has allowed Donaji to provide direct care to Chuy 24/7.  She has faithfully been at his side all this time.

So humbly we come back to you, beautiful community, to ask for your financial support again.  Are you able to give the same amount?  More?    We are painfully aware of many needs throughout our bay area community right now so give what you can, but please give. Please know, any amount is appreciated.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 by the end of September. You can make your donation here - https://www.youcaring.com/jesuslona-756912or at the upcoming fundraising dinner in San Francisco.

We send you love to you and your loved ones, may this be a reminder to all of us to hold each other tight and be grateful for each day no matter what the circumstances.

In gratitude, struggle and towards liberation,

The Friends of the Familia Esteva Lona

We are aiming to raise $25,000 in 7 days. Please consider what you can give, and then consider if you can give double that amount.

The society we live in does not take care of all of us, our families and communities. The government nor private corporations are structured to show up to make sure we can all live and die with dignity. As a community of people who believe in concepts like interdependence, redistribution of resources, reparations, etc. - this political moment is a time to put good ideas into practice.

This is a call and an opportunity to show up for Donaji and her family, to support them in ways our society does not, and to put our political values into practice.

These resources will meet Donaji and her family’s basic needs, capacity to support Chuy and to have time and space to be with one another in this heartbreaking time.

Dear community/family:

I want to share with you a bit about last couple of moths with Chuy. He received for the last 2 months 5 days of chemoteraphy in each to try to stop his leukemia from advancing, but it isn’t working. Two days ago his leukemia cell count went up from 5% to 12%. In the last two months Chuy had 2 tong infections that made it so that his tong was so swollen he couldn’t keep it inside his mouth, and deep sores that were extremely painful. He spent a month with fevers and pain in his bones and mouth. He stopped eating solids for a month and half and after 8 days when he count even drink liquids he had malnutrition and his organs couldn’t retain liquids. Because of liquid retention he got swollen in his stomach and back.
His inmune system is at 0 and sometimes hi bleeds a little because he doesn’t have platelets. Right now he has a red eye. He has had days where he will sleep a lot and his energy seems to be almost exhausted.

But his spirit of ligth is a different story. Even when he wakes up for 3-4 hrs he would ask to play music, he laughs at me, his aunt, grandma and Mampu, he laughs with the nurses or something funny on tv, and when there is no more he laughs at himself. Every time that we’ve thought it will be supper difficult for him to get better from his symptoms, he surprises us waking up happy and with lots of vitality. Even with the amount of pain in his mouth he takes his meds and drinks what he can to feed himself; sometimes he even tries a bit of solids.
The doctors have told me that he has a few weeks left, and every minute he extends it and expands it with his alchemist of life magic.
He is this way, every day even with this incurable desease his body heals from something and in so many ways he shows us his love for us, his family, love for him self and his life that is full of music, dancing and singing. He honors it living through it the best he can, no mater where he is and under what conditions.

Its indiscribable the pain and desperation and bitterness that sometimes consumes me, I can feel my heart harden about everything other than Chuy and caring for him and receiving his tenderness. Your prayers and good wishes, your love, tenderness and compassion toward all of us are received like vibrations to the harden heart and continuously remind me: soften just a bit, just a little bit.

Thanks for your gracious intentions, for your love activating mine, because thanks to your help i’ve had the indescriptible joy of being with my beautiful warrior in this fight to live, and continue by his side to learn to live in love. This is beautiful marvel is what you are helping us sustain with your efforts.

English version of update on 3/12/17:

We are infinitely grateful for your love and solidarity in action. Chuy is better, recovering from a strong infection in his mouth and throat. He is in treatment for an infection in his blood.  Each day he very much enjoys listening to music, and even when he doesn't have much energy, he dances in his bed, or laughs heartily at something on the television. When he receives cards and he's moved by them, he kisses them.  If the music therapist arrives, he sings with excitement.  And sometimes when he's overwhelmed, he asks us for some distance.  Thanks to your love and prayers and solidarity, you have raised by the spoonful the sweetness of his being.  You are a blessing in our lives.  Even when many of you are not present, you are part of what makes possible the magic that allows us to look into each others eyes every morning and share (with each other), day to day.
