The Story

Ismael Chamu is currently a 4th year studying sociology at UC Berkeley. His family has struggled in recent months to make ends meet. He currently helps support his two sisters, younger brother, mom and dad. He has to leave his current housing on the 13th. Money will be used to buy  food, secure housing, and school supplies. Ismael is passionate about helping others, he was a co-founder and leader in social justice oriented clubs on campus like the Pre-Law Coalition for Social Justice and United Children of Immigrants. His family recently relocated to Hayward when his parents were no longer able to support themselves in Central California. Despite all of the barriers and hardship Ismael faces on a daily basis you will always find him with a smile.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for the continued love and support. We are still trying to secure housing for the family as well as potential job opportunities for the dad. After ensuring that the family has secure housing, housing items (beds, linens, etc.), healthcare, transportation, food, school supplies, and once the girls are caught up in school, the family will donate the remaining funds. The remaining funds will be allocated to individual students who struggle with food and housing instability as well as on-campus organizations advocating for student's food and housing security. Please reach out if you have any leads on housing or any other additional support!

Hi Everyone! Thank you so much for all of the support you've been giving. Ismael and his family greatly appreciate it. We spent all of yesterday packing, since the family had to move out today. A very kind family opened their home and they will be staying there for about a week until we can find permanent housing for the family.

The money will be used to find housing and also everything needed with a new place such as furniture, dishes, a bed, and clothing. The family has almost nothing. We will begin looking at schools where to enroll the girls as well as try to secure them healthcare. The family fell ill to a stomach virus possibly due to the exposure to the sewage and have not been able to seek a doctor since they have no insurance. The money will also be used to enroll the parents in English classes, get the father a contractors license and tools and supplies so that he can begin working in landscape & construction. We are also hoping to get a car for the family to move around-take the daughters to school, get Ismael to school, and help the parents go to work.

We truly appreciate all of your support and words of encouragement, if you have any leads on permanent housing options please send me a message as well as any other resources you might have.
