Irish Arts Center and Liam Neeson invite you to raise your glass for the write reasons this St. Patrick's Day. Help us nurture and promote Irish writers, artists and musicians throughout the whole month of March!
The month of March has the power to make anyone feel Irish. Several years ago one of the leading morning TV shows, with more than 4 million viewers, had a quiz about Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day. The first two questions were: What do Leprechauns do for a living? And secondly, how many pints of Guinness are consumed on St. Patrick’s day?
Seriously. Those are the two most important questions to ask when it comes to celebrating the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day?!
At Irish Arts Center we set out to help change that narrative. On St. Patrick’s Day the media are telling Irish stories and our children are listening and watching. How are we telling our story? What image are we projecting to the rest of the world on St. Patrick’s Day?With four Nobel Prizes in Literature, great songwriters, poets, dramatists, novelists, screen-writers, comedy writers and the gift of the gab… there is so much to celebrate about Ireland and the Irish.
For the past 8 years Irish Arts Center staff and volunteers have taken to the streets all across New York, in all five boroughs, to distribute more than 10,000 free books each year by Irish and Irish American authors to New Yorkers of all backgrounds.
This year we enlisted the help of some of our friends to raise awareness of this great project and invited people to participate by tweeting out a picture of their favorite book, along with #GetLit, #IACBookDay, @irishartscenter, and encouraged people to get involved by underwriting a drop of drama, a pint of poetry, or a liter of limericks.
For the price of the world's most iconic beer, you can help us change the narrative. If you care about the image that is projected about Ireland and the Irish, we ask you to donate at whatever level is meaningful to you. No donation is too small, and each and every gift will make a difference.
We are keeping the St. Patrick's Day spirit alive and encourage you to #GetLit with us all month long.
