When I had 3 cancers and lost 4 organs, the ACA saved my life. Now I’m trying to save the ACA’s life and need your help. The Mission: to drive around the U.S. in an RV to help people sign up for health insurance.
The ACA is still under attack. Outreach programs have been de-funded, the enrollment period has shortened and subsidies are not guaranteed. Medically fragile people like me are at risk for losing coverage - which means death for many of us - if the market continues to de-stabilize.
This is an urgent matter and we don’t have much time! A team of Washington state activists are working together to pull off a 3-4 week road trip during the enrollment period which is Nov 1-Dec 15. Our hope is to help people get signed up, interview locals about their health care worries and wishes, and pull together a network of health care advocates so we can fight this together.
Will you help fund this RV trip so that we can protect our healthcare system and medically fragile people?
WHO THE HECK IS JULES?
Julie Negrin has had four unrelated cancers by age 42. She’s been advocating for the ACA since October 2016, has spoken with Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Jayapal and soon with Governor Inslee. You may know her as the woman who pledged to refuse medical treatment if the ACA was repealed in July. Julie used to be a nutritionist, food educator, and author in her former life. Now that she is disabled, she hopes to lend her 20+ years of event planning and food activism to save the ACA and our health care system from being destroyed.
WHO IS WORKING ON THIS PROJECT?
A team of Washington health care advocates from Indivisible are working on this project. The money will be collected and managed by several members to ensure 100% accountability and transparency. All expenses will be shared publicly for full transparency. There will be a driver, helper, and Julie for a total of three travelers.
WHAT WILL THE MONEY COVER?
Money will cover ONLY expenses. No one will be paid except for a helper that will assist Julie since she is disabled. Receipts will be photographed and shared online for full transparency. If more money is raised than is necessary for the trip, it will go towards marketing the ACA sign-up since the government is no longer funding it and/or lobbying/advocacy to protect the ACA.
RV rental, gas, hook-up, camping, hotels when medically necessary $10,000
Food for three people for 3-6 weeks $3000
Overnight shipping of Julie’s medication along the route $500
Facebook ads, event marketing, stickers/signs to let people know about short enrollment period ACA $1000
Helper/Medical Assistant $2000-2500
HOW LONG IS THE JOURNEY?
We hope to be on the road a minimum of 3 weeks and as long as 6 weeks during the open enrollment of the ACA which is Nov 1-Dec 15, 2017. A lot depends on how much money is raised, how many towns/cities offer to host, and Julie’s health.
WHERE WILL WE BE STOPPING?
We may not have time and money to get to all these states but we will TRY: WA, OR, ID, NV, UT, AZ, NM, CA...if we can keep going, we'll go to any state that wants to host us!
If you want to create a Sign-Up Event in your area, join our Facebook page: Jules Journey to Save ACA and sign up in the Volunteer Form. Stay tuned for a free How to Host an Awesome Activist Event document which will be available on Julie's site soon. Email IndivisibleACA at gmail with questions!
WHO WILL WE MEET WITH?
We'll work with anyone who wants help, regardless of political affiliation.
A little note from Jules:
The reason we need to travel in an RV is because I lost organs that impact my digestion. If I’m traveling in an RV, then I have access to a bathroom and refrigerate my broth and IV saline bags. By donating and/or volunteering for this project, you'll be giving a little bit of independence to a disabled person, which is a real gift.
