The Story

Originally from Mexico, Yasmin came to this country in 2006 and worked as a fast food worker for over 11 years. She was a passionate advocate for her co-workers and community and instrumental in building the Fight for 15 movement in San Jose.

An LGBTQ Latinx immigrant, fearless leader, and tireless organizer, Yasmin embodied everything this movement stands for.

On Thursday September 14, Yasmin collapsed while working sick (due to short staff), had a heart attack, and fell into a coma. After doctors determined that she would not regain consciousness, and with the the approval of her family and partner, Yasmin was removed from life support and passed away peacefully.

This fundraiser will benefit her mother Ignacia Ramirez Caro and, my mother, her partner of 15 years, Blanca Rodriguez, and will be used to cover economic hardship on the family and funeral costs.

We're over halfway to our goal! Your generous contributions and kind notes have been so inspiring and comforting to Yasmin's family and her Fight for 15 comrades. She would have been deeply humbled by this outpouring of support and would have wanted to honor each of you for contributing your money, thoughts and prayers to ease the pressure on her family.

Yasmin would be so proud that many of you have given $3, $4, $5... She lived the struggle to make ends meet and knew intimately that every dollar spent was a choice.

Due to your contributions there will be a memorial next week to celebrate her life. We'll update here with details and welcome anyone who can attend with open arms.
