The Story

Support vulnerable refugee children and their families in Greece!

OCC (Open Cultural Center) is a non profit organization that develops educational and cultural programs in Greek camps, and in city centers where vulnerable refugees are being housed. ("Vulnerable" = unaccompanied minors, families with young children, women who have liberated themselves from unsafe family situations.) We base everything we do on the community's input and community-determined needs.

For our latest project (in Polykastro), we've already transformed an empty commercial space, and we need your help to keep the lights and heat on--help us keep these lovely children warm!

Our teachers come from the refugee, Greek and volunteer communities. Courses include math, English, German, Arabic, Greek, art, music, yoga/meditation, sewing, and sports. We also host workshops (asylum information, free legal aid).

This our fourth OCC in Greece, and we are actively scouting our fifth location. Your donations will support the Polykastro center's operating expenses for one year, plus the startup and operating costs for another OCC location centralized in a population of vulnerable refugees. Our purchases also support the local Greek economy, building goodwill with an already generous local community.

Your €10 buys one chair for a student to sit on while learning
Your €30 buys a box of art supplies for children to channel their creativity
Your €76 pays the rent for a community's safe space for one week
Your €750 fully supports this community space: rent, heating, supplies, water and electrical costs for 90 students for one month

Please help us continue to offer a safe, comfortable culture and learning space. Because of you, some wonderful humans who have been displaced from their homes will smile and continue their education today! Thank you!

Hi, beloved friends and fundraisers!

We’ve been working very hard during the last months to get the Polykastro center opened full time, and thanks to your collaboration now we even have our own little library! With the help of the GetShitDone Team, we refurnished the beautiful Community Center, a space which has around 100 people coming everyday, where they can have a coffe, chill out, play cards or just having some talks with the people around.

Summer started with the celebration of Eid al-Firt, the ending of Ramadam, with special activities for kids, a great dinner with live music, a football tournament and some presents (thanks to A Drop in the Ocean to facilitate it).

During the summer, once every two weeks we take the families from the community in Polykastro to the swimming pool, to refresh themselves and learn how to swim with a lifeguard. Our Science Fridays are always a success, and many students come every evening to the OCC Language School.

We’ve also worked with various international organizations in different multicultural and inclusion festivals in Polikastro.

Clowns Without borders with Tortel Poltrona and company came at the beginning of July. Volunteers from all over the world, the Sirian comunity and locals attended to the main square to enjoy this funny show together. Thanks to Payasos sin fronteras for this amazing performance!

This August we’ve also worked together with the Oddisey Project and other international organizations in the Routes Festival, which brings music, performances, workshops, games for children and adults and also some food for people from Nea Kavala Camp and Polykastro.

But none of these would have been possible without your support. Thank you for your drop in the sea!!!

We hosted our Polykastro launch party! Over 50 people ate, dance, sang and had fun together. Some of the families met for the first time. Two community members and our coordinator gave speeches that the center is for the community, to support what they want to do with it. One of our community members said, "this was the best lunch of my life." The children were full of laughter, and adults full of smiles. We at OCC are so happy that, with your help, the center is going to be a success! We're very close to opening the center full time--this week the interior walls will be installed! Please check out our Facebook page for pictures of the event. Thank you for your support!!
