The Story

Support vulnerable refugee children and their families in Greece!

OCC (Open Cultural Center) is a non profit organization that develops educational and cultural programs in Greek camps, and in city centers where vulnerable refugees are being housed. ("Vulnerable" = unaccompanied minors, families with young children, women who have liberated themselves from unsafe family situations.) We base everything we do on the community's input and community-determined needs.

For our latest project (in Polykastro), we've already transformed an empty commercial space, and we need your help to keep the lights and heat on--help us keep these lovely children warm!

Our teachers come from the refugee, Greek and volunteer communities. Courses include math, English, German, Arabic, Greek, art, music, yoga/meditation, sewing, and sports. We also host workshops (asylum information, free legal aid).

This our fourth OCC in Greece, and we are actively scouting our fifth location. Your donations will support the Polykastro center's operating expenses for one year, plus the startup and operating costs for another OCC location centralized in a population of vulnerable refugees. Our purchases also support the local Greek economy, building goodwill with an already generous local community.

Your €10 buys one chair for a student to sit on while learning
Your €30 buys a box of art supplies for children to channel their creativity
Your €76 pays the rent for a community's safe space for one week
Your €750 fully supports this community space: rent, heating, supplies, water and electrical costs for 90 students for one month

Please help us continue to offer a safe, comfortable culture and learning space. Because of you, some wonderful humans who have been displaced from their homes will smile and continue their education today! Thank you!

Hello Fundraisers! I hope everything is fine for you all. In OCC we are really happy because our project "Escola Refugi" has been super well received by catalan schools! Last friday we closed our participation with "Teno Menjadors", a company which helped us on organising the lectures with the children at launch time in the different schools :)

In Polikastro, IsrAid's association did an activity with the children based on psicosocial support and we are still working on the schooling of all the children who couldn't go to school yet.

We will leave you some pictures in the "Photos & Videos" section about both activities, but we remind you that you can follow us on Twitter (@OCC_Project), Facebook (Open Cultural Center - OCC) and Instagram (@openculturalcenter)! Have a nice week everyone!!! ;)

Good morning Fundraisers!

This week in Barcelona we are mainly focused in our project Escola Refugi, through which we are visiting schools every day and talking with the children about the situation of refugees. This week will be full of lectures and activities in different schools, with which we are working to better organise them and transmit the values and ideas of solidarity, respect and participation to the children and adolescents. We are very happy because the schools are helping us a lot with the organisation of the lectures and the different activities that we are doing with the children!

At the same time, we are looking for runners who would like to run in the Zurich Marathonwhich will be hold in Barcelona on Sunday 11th March! If any of you is interested you can send an email to [email protected] and we will give you more details!

In Polikastro, our colleagues are giving to the refugees educational support and they are organising different activities everyday. Every weekend, on saturday, they organise a football match in which everyone can participate! Children, adults, volunteers...

And to end up with this post, we have good news! We signed a convention with different Universities and Training Centers of Spain and Italy to receive students who would like to do their traneeship with us, either in Barcelona or Polikastro! If you know someone or you want to help us in a different way you can also send an email to [email protected]

Thank you very much for your support!!! :)

Dear Fundraisers! Thank you so much for all your support and help. We are working very hard in all our projects in Barcelona and Polikastro:

In Barcelona, in this moment, we have two itinerant expositions made with the collaboration of the refugees people that we met in Cherso and Polikastro. We already talked about both expositions in our last post, you can check it out! ;)

At the same time we kept going with our project Escola Refugi, in which we visit schools and we talk with the children about the refugee's situation and we expose them our work. We also offer to these schools our book "Amic Meu" ("My Friend"). Through the one teachers explain to the children the refugee's situation.

We are also working on the promotion of the book and last week we enjoyed a play inspired by the book :)

In Polykastro, we are still working as a bridge between greek schools and the refugee's families and we are working so hard to have all the children scolarised

On the meantime we are still doing some cultural and artistic activities with the refugees.

You will find some pictures of an activity that we did last week in collaboration with the IsraAid association (the projection of a movie in order to work on the emotions) in our Facebook page

Thank you all for your support!
