What a year 2016 has been! With everything that is going on, every little thing we can do to make the world a better place matters that much more! Don't you agree?
At HugTrain, we believe that small actions cause big changes and that everyone has the power to make a difference! Be it with hugs or smiles or anything else and we encourage everyone to find that small thing they can do to change the world around them.
Year after year, studies are being published that show that social isolation poses important health risks and that loneliness is becoming a major public health crisis which is more likely to cause early death than obesity!
Since 2009, HugTrain has travelled more than twice the distance it would take to go around the world giving out hugs, smiles, encouragement and support. What started as a small add-on to a personal trip is now an annual trip to spread cheer and reduce social isolation that is felt even more acutely as the days get shorter and everywhere we turn we see reminders that the holidays, a time for social gatherings and increased spending, are fast approaching. Sadly, many people face being alone or not being able to afford the travel, gifts and fancier food required to celebrate and many are reminded of someone who is no longer part of their lives.
By travelling across the continent by train we reach people who live in smaller towns and we reach people who may be travelling alone and for personal reasons that are less than fun.
In 2012, after the third HugTrain tour our founder suffered a brain injury and has been unable to work since and has relied on the support of people like you to carry on with this important work. What was once the work of one person has become a pay it forward chain or train if you will. And we need your help to keep that train going!
We need help paying for travel, food, accommodations and printing.
In-kind donations and help finding the things we need for free or for cheap are also very much appreciated!
"Thank you for the hug, Arie!! It wasn't the best day, nor was it the worst day, but after that hug from you at Scotia Square, it didn't seem to matter what kind of day it was. Your hug made my heart soar all day and well into the night. In fact, I was grinning from ear to ear until I went to sleep last night." -Theresa Babb, Halifax
By helping to fund HugTrain, you are reaching people who would otherwise be alone and in many cases you will be inspiring them to make the world a better place in their own way! It’s a truly wonderful thing! This means you'll be directly involved in alleviating social isolation and improving lives without the discomfort of sleeping upright for 13 out of 31 nights like Arié ;)
Other ways to help:
- Come out to hug, be hugged and take pictures at our stops Check out the itinerary here. Are you along the route this year? :)
- Help us find the things we would otherwise have to pay for (food, a couch or bed to sleep on, a ride or even some Amtrak or hotel program points)
- Tell your friends about HugTrain and this campaign.
Thank you so much for all of your help! :)
