The Story

As many of you know, I have been living with the End-stage renal disease for the past two years.

On January 15, 2016, I went into complete kidney failure and had to start dialysis. I have been on dialysis treatment for 14 months, which has made it challenging to maintain a good quality of life, but I’m fortunate because my father is willing and able to gift me one of his kidneys. My parents are coming to Los Angeles from Michigan for the surgery and will be here for approximately three weeks. Words cannot express what this means to me.

Because I have been on dialysis, and have not had any other major setbacks, I have been able to work part-time. With the help of family, I have been able to keep up with all but the most major of my medical bills.

I have come to realize that I’ll need help to get through the transplant and the healing process. The cost of a transplant (including preliminary testing, the surgery itself and post-operative recovery) will be in excess of $250,000. I’m not sure exactly how much will be covered by my insurance.

The transplant and recovery are expected to take 8 to 12 weeks for myself, and 3 to 4 weeks for my father. I’m trying to raise money to cover the costs of:

  • Dialysis
  • Pre-transplant evaluations
  • The procedure itself
  • Follow-up care and testing
  • Anti-rejection drugs
  • Rehabilitation

Asking for help is difficult for me; asking family and friends to help me with money is even more so. In a perfect world, no one should have to worry about how they will pay for life-saving medicine. I’ve been blessed with a strong network of family and friends, and I’m continually surprised and gratified by the number of people offering their love and support.

Please help my Dad and I get the very best care possible. The transplant process is long and taxing. Your love and support can help ease that burden. The past few years have been challenging for me and my fiancée, Jaime. (Oh yeah, that’s right, we’re engaged and we’re planning to get married in May of 2018!!!) I feel fortunate that my father is able to donate and that I have the opportunity of a better future. I appreciate anything you can do to help.

Thank you for your time and your support.

Love, Hugh

Today is the 12th day since my surgery, and I can happily say that my father and I are doing well. Dad has been cleared to fly back home, and I have been home now for a week.

I wanted thank you all for the thoughts, prayer, and support you have offered my family and myself. Your gift has meant so much and helped carry us through this process so far. I am grateful, touched and in awe of the love that you all have so graciously given.

The Docs are happy with the results of the surgery. My kidney function has improved to almost normal range. Now that my kidney function is more normal I have discovered that I have the world's tiniest bladder! I guess that’s what happens when you don't use it much for a couple of years.

The bulk of my recovery process will take place over the next 10 weeks. I expect my kidney function will continue to improve, and my immune system to recover from the anti-rejection medications.

One last thing, if you know of anyone who has questions about kidney failure, dialysis, and/or transplants, send them my way. I will happily answer any questions I can. I would like to give back in as many ways as possible.

Love you all,

Hugh

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. Today is the day. Please keep my father and me in your thoughts and prayers. In total, we expect the procedure to take about 4 hours
