The Story

Help Housing+Solutions create homes for 30 formerly homeless female veterans.

When people think of a veteran, many picture an older man. At Housing+Solutions, we strive to provide safe, affordable, supportive homes for our country's "hidden heroes": homeless female veterans.

In 2013, Housing+Solutions opened New York City's first permanent housing program exclusively for homeless female veterans. Since then, we've served over 60 women. We're adding 30 new units of permanent supportive housing this fall, but we need your help to welcome these hidden heroes to their new homes.

As of 2016, there are over 2 million female veterans, including 65,000 who live in New York. Although the overall number of veterans experiencing homelessness is decreasing, homelessness among female veterans is still on the rise due to a number of reasons. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, 1 in 5 female veterans report experiencing military sexual trauma (MST). Women who enter the military often do so to escape abusive and traumatic situations. Because of this, female veterans may not be comfortable accessing services or shelter in a male-dominated environment. While the VA is skilled with addressing combat-related PTSD, women who may have experienced other kinds of trauma need different supports.

Finding safe housing for their family can be challenging for female veterans experiencing homelessness. More than 28 percentof female veterans have children under 17 living with them, and even more have children living with relatives or in foster care. 11% of women in the armed forces are single parents.

Housing+Solutions provides the safety and support that these hidden heroes need to adjust to civilian life and begin to address the issues that have led to or contributed to their homelessness. Working in partnership with the VA and other resources, our program prioritizes and adapts to the specific needs and experiences of female veterans. Here’s what our support for female veterans looks like:

  • Permanent subsidized housing, where they pay 30% of their income for rent
  • Trauma therapy to help them address symptoms related to PTSD, MST, anxiety, and depression
  • Family counseling to help them and their children overcome the effects of having been homeless; for children who were in foster care or with relatives, help for families adjust to being reunited
  • Support and guidance to help them connect to VA services and benefits
  • Support to enroll in education and job training so they can obtain and maintain employment

Thank you to those who have shared and donated to our campaign so far! With your help, we’ll be able to help more veterans like our current tenant Shadequa. Born and raised in BedStuy, Shadequa joined the Marine Corps as a way to pay for college. After serving for 5 years, she struggled to reintegrate to civilian society as a veteran. "It was like I had to move my entire life without any help," she said. "I got out and basically immediately became homeless." With support from the GI Bill, Shadequa had enrolled in college, but she struggled to find a landlord who would accept her vouchers. "I would stay in my school’s library because it was sometimes open 24 hours," she said. "So I would sleep there and go to the gym to shower and things like that.”

As both a woman and a veteran, Shadequa felt particularly left out when she started looking for help. “I think the biggest misconception is that we’re tough and nothing gets to us,” she said, “that because we are veterans, we can handle being homeless.”

Finally, she found a veterans shelter that referred her to Housing+Solutions in December of 2015. She said that when she first saw her new apartment, "I couldn't believe it. Not only did they give me an apartment, they gave me a voucher for furniture and also for pots and pans. I was able to get bedding, sheets." Shadequa is well on her way to earning a master's degree in social work, which she hopes to use to help veterans like herself.

You can make a difference for veterans like Shadequa who have given so much for our country by donating to this campaign and sharing it with your friends and families.
