This Memorial Day weekend, Eternal Reefs, a non-profit organization, is creating the first ever undersea memorial honoring all 65 American submarines and more than 4,000 officers and crew who remain forever On Eternal Patrol. The On Eternal Patrol Memorial Reef will preserve and protect the marine environment while honoring our lost heroes.
Your contributions will assist the On Eternal Patrol Memorial Reef Project with individual memorial reefs representing each of the lost submarines. Each reef will be huge – 3 feet tall and about 1,300 pounds – and will include a permanent plaque identifying the memorialized submarine with date of loss, best known location and recognition of the loss of life.
On Memorial Day weekend 2018 in Sarasota, Florida, Eternal Reefs will provide military funeral honors for all 65 lost submarines. The honors ceremony will present A Tolling of the Bells, Taps, and a Rifle Salute along with flags presented to appropriate representatives of each lost submarine. After the honors ceremony, the decorated memorial reefs will be taken by boat to the designated reef site and representatives will be given the opportunity to dedicate the site to the sub and crew in the environment in which they made the ultimate sacrifice, the sea.
Beginning immediately, we are accepting contributions which will be used solely for this project: the cost of the ceremony, reefs, plaques and final placement of the On Eternal Patrol Memorial Reef. In the event excess funds are raised, they will defray the cost of providing an Eternal Reef memorial for eligible veterans who want an Eternal Reef as their final legacy.
Since 1998, more than 100 of our nation’s veterans have been honored with an Eternal Reef. In one project, we had five WWII combat veterans receive military honors by Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force honor guards. In another project, we worked with the VFW Post 10097 in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida to honor six airmen lost in a 1942 training exercise, whose crash site had recently been discovered by a group of divers.
Spending time with families and sharing stories like these has had a major impact on all of us at Eternal Reefs. With our focus clearly on working to preserve and protect the marine environment for future generations, the idea of a special underwater memorial honoring the submarine service was a natural extension of our mission.
We welcome you to learn about our work via our website and Facebook page and please join us as we make history. Your generous contribution to the On Eternal Patrol Memorial Reef Project is greatly appreciated and 100% tax deductible.
