The Story

Meet Hondo, a dog who is very deserving of a second chance. We believe Hondo is about 2 years old and was recently surrendered to Waukegan Animal Control when his owner no longer wanted to care for him. Hondo appears to be a happy dog, but very quickly you notice a big problem - his back legs are paralyzed and not functional. According to his past owner, Hondo was born like this but we really don't know what the full story is. Hondo is coming to Wisconsin the first week of January 2018 to join the Canine Cupids family. Hondo will eventually be up for adoption but our first focus is to get him the care he desperately needs. Please check back often for updates on Hondo, as well as, new pictures and videos to track his progress.

What will donations be used for? Great question. We are anxious to get Hondo to a vet as soon as possible to learn more about him and are hopeful about the possibility of improving his overall condition and quality of life. We would like to get Hondo into therapy to try to strengthen his back half. Hondo will need several aides in order to properly care for him; including a cart or some type of buggy, a bag for paralyzed pets, a sling to help him walk, and whatever else will make him more comfortable and safe. We will update this page often as we learn more and create our plan.

Canine Cupids is a registered 501(c)3 charity recognized by the federal government as a not-for-profit organization publicly funded by donations and fundraising events. All donations are tax deductible and relied upon for us to continue to help animals in need. Your generosity is very much appreciated. You can view our website here, www.caninecupids.org

Hondo and all the volunteers of Canine Cupids thank you for your support.

Hondo has come so very far since his last update. He has gained 8 lbs! His white blood cell count fell dramatically (almost in half from where it was) which is very good! His tummy issues are still prevalent but starting to show some small signs of improvement. This is a key aspect to his recovery as using his new wheelchair, a drag bag, and general mobility is easier once things get a bit less messy. As far as the wheelchair goes, the donation from Gunnar’s wheels arrived and tomorrow he will be going back to the vet for his fitting. He also has started to see a chiropractor who had initial good news that she could not tell anything from the x-ray or physical exam, but that means an MRI will need to be done to tell us more. Foster mom has been working hard with Hondo on standing – just propping him up and standing. So far he is doing great with it and has even tried to stand up on his own a few times. Not a lot of success yet, but trying is good. I am posting another bill from the vet and soon will share some of all the various expenses such as diapers, puppy pads, toys, drag bags, special food for his tummy, and all of the other little things. Once again we thank all of his supporters for their love and donations. Keep Hondo in your thoughts. I will also post some more video’s of Hondo, you can see just how much love is coming his way from his foster mom and biggest fans. Enjoy!

Thank you again to all of Hondo's supporters. Without all of you we could not get him the help he needs - and deserves. We believe in full transparency so I am posting his first bill here so that you can see first hand where your donations are being used. Hondo saw the vet on the 8th as you can see by the invoice. We found out Hondo is anemic, severely emaciated, protein levels are low, and an initial fecal showed nothing but we will schedule a recheck for next week. His white cell count is also high so hopefully blood tests will tell us more. Tonight Hondo is being visited by a chiropractor to help align his front half and review x-rays of the damage in his spine. We will be sure to let you know what is found. More updates to come soon.

First of all, thank you to all of Hondo's supporters. The generosity and kindness of all of you will make a direct impact on the recovery of this wonderful dog and we just cannot thank you all enough who have donated and sent well wishes. Hondo is still settling in to his foster home and we are addressing a few issues first; sores from dragging himself and a case of diarrhea. His foster mom is amazing and is truly taking the best possible care of this boy. This week we plan on getting Hondo to a neurological specialist and a chiropractor to learn more about his condition and what we can do to help him on his road to recovery. The very kind and gracious people of Gunnar's wheels will be sending us a wheelchair so that Hondo can get off the ground and start to gain some mobility, we hope to have that this coming weeek. that is what we have in the works and hopefully will have some good news to share as we learn more. In the meantime I will be updating some new pictures including an adorable shot of Hondo enjoying some pumpkin and chicken to make his tummy feel better. In the meantime, once again, thank you all. Please keep sharing his story and sending positive thoughts.
